The Maju Ward – the Chief Executioners of the ‘Grand Deception’ campaign of the MCA

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the first National DAP General Elections public rally at Mountbatton Road Taxi Stand, Kuala Lumpur, on 6th April 1969 at 8.30p.m.

The Alliance and the MCA have launched their ‘Grand Deception’ campaign to mislead and deceive the voters to support and vote the alliance candidates in the general elections.

Those who have been appointed the chief executioners of the ‘grand Deception’ campaign in the MCA are the so-called intellectuals of the MCA Maju Ward.

In the last one week, the two MCA Maju Ward candidates, Mr. Lew Sip Hon candidate for Bungsar, and Dr. Teh Hock Hin, candidate for Setapak, who had never been known to show the least concern for the fate of Chinese education, language and culture in Malaysia, began suddenly to show interest in the problem, and even made some sympathetic noises.

The MCA propaganda machinery virtually presented Mr. Lew Sip Hon and Dr. Teh Hock Him as the sole saviours of Chinese education, language and culture in Malaysia. Continue reading The Maju Ward – the Chief Executioners of the ‘Grand Deception’ campaign of the MCA

Contesting the Bandar Melaka seat in the General Election

Statement by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a press conference after Nomination on 5th April 1969

Firstly, let me explain why I am standing in Bandar Melaka and not in Damansara parliamentary constituency, as generally expected.

I personally had wanted to contest the Damansara parliamentary constituency, but the Central Executive Committee of the Party decided that I should contest Bandar Melaka. I will give two reasons:

(1) Bandar Melaka is one of the most important parliamentary constituencies in West Malaysia. The winning of the Bandar Melaka Parliamentary constituency will guarantee the DAP take-over and control of the Malacca Municipality when and if municipal elections are held, because the entire municipality Is inside the Bandar Melaka Parliamentary constituency. It is the intention of the DAP to make the Malacca Municipality the model of administration, government efficiency and dynamism, to show to the people of Malaysia what the DAP can do when it comes into power, whether municipality, state or federal level. DAP calls for all–party meeting to allocate radio and TV time during general elections

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the Perak DAP State Committee Meeting at Ipoh, on Tuesday, 11th March 1969 at 7.30p.m.

During the forthcoming general elections campaign, the competing political parties should get fair allocation of radio and television time to explain their party platform and programmes to the electorate.

In the past, the Alliance party unilaterally and arbitrarily allocated radio time to the various political parties, with it getting the lion’s share. Apart from other semi-political radio broadcasts, the entire radio network was virtually devoted to alliance propaganda during the general elections.

This is unfair and undemocratic. During general elections, the radio and television facilities should be fairly available to the various competing political parties to put their views to the electorate so that the voters can choose between the various parties and platforms with an informed mind.

The DAP therefore calls for the setting up of an all party committee to allocate radio and television time to the various competing parties in the general elections, on fair and equitable and democratic basis. This should be decided now, and not wait until after Nomination Day. Continue reading DAP calls for all–party meeting to allocate radio and TV time during general elections

DAP to contest Klang Parliamentary and State seats

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP Public Rally at Pandamaram New Village, near Port Swettenham, on Sunday, 23.2.1969 at 8p.m.

The DAP and the Gerakan have reached an electoral understanding for the coming general elections to avoid three-cornered electoral contests.

The DAP will field candidates in all the Parliamentary and State constituencies in Klang. This means that the DAP will contest the Damansara, Klang and Kapar Parliamentary seats, and the Bukit Raja, Kampong Jawa, Port Swettenham and Sementa State seats.

The people of Klang and the Surrounding areas will have a clear choice before them in the next general elections which will be held most probably in May.

They have to choose between the racialism, feudalism, capitalism, corruption and incompetence of the Alliance, and the DAP crusade for a clean, honest and effective government, cultural democracy, multi-lingualism, democratic, socialism and a Malaysian Malaysia. GERAKAN and Serdang By-election

The DAP Candidate for Serdang, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, who is also DAP Organising Secretary, today issued the following statement:

At the Gerakan Serdang by-election public rally in Serdang Bahru new village last Sunday, 8th December 1968, the Gerakan Secretary-General, Dr. Tan Chee Khoon asserted that the DAP and myself have branded the people of Serdang Bahru and Salak South new villages as ‘communists.’

This is a downright lie. I have never said or thought any such thing, nor is it the view of the DAP.

I invite Dr. Tan Chee Khoon to substantiate his statement, to state where and when I or the DAP had made any such statement. Continue reading GERAKAN and Serdang By-election

General elections plans and preparations

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the Johore DAP State Committee meeting held in Kluang on Saturday, 17th Nov. 1968 at 3.30 p.m. to discuss plans and preparations for the general elections.

After the Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election, Alliance Ministers began to attack the DAP. Even the Deputy Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak, referred specifically to the DAP when he went down to Tampoi early this month. Tun Razak said the DAP is a dangerous party. What he meant is that the DAP is dangerous to the Alliance.

If the DAP had lost badly in Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election, no Alliance Minister, least of all Tun Abdul Razak, would have bothered to talk about the DAP. Continue reading General elections plans and preparations

DAP elections bureau

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, to members of the Penang Utara DAP Branch on Tuesday, November 5, 1968

The Central Executive Committee of the Democratic Action Party will meet this Sunday in Kuala Lumpur to further review party preparations for the general elections.

The Central Executive Committee has set up an elections bureau, which will study the constituencies the DAP should contest, and the nomination of candidates.

The DAP will not make the mistakes some opposition political parties committed in the past, in fielding a large number of candidates to lose their deposits. Continue reading DAP elections bureau

Code of conduct for political parties at elections

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the DAP public rally at Lawan Kuda, Gopeng, on Saturday, 2nd November 1968 at 8 p.m.

The Sarawak National Party (SNAP) last week called for the establishment of an all-party elections commission to draw up a code of conduct for political parties at the forthcoming general elections.

A code of conduct for the general elections is very necessary in order to forestall dishonest and unscrupulous politicking during elections. This is why the DAP had also called for such an all-party commission to draw up an electoral code at the end of last year.

From past election experiences, the ruling Alliance had always been guilty of dishonest and unscrupulous politicking.

In any parliamentary democracy, there is a clear-cut distinction between the ruling party and the government. This should be particularly marked during the general elections period. Continue reading Code of conduct for political parties at elections

Operation ‘Voters Check’

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, to the Sentul DAP Branch on Wednesday, October 30, 1968 at 8 p.m.

The DAP Headquarters has instructed all its branches in the country to carry out a house-to-house campaign in their respective areas to check that voters who had voted in the 1959 and 1964 general elections are still on the electoral register.

We found that in the recent Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election, at one polling centre alone, there were several hundred voters who have lost their right to vote because their names had been struck off from the electoral register, although they had voted in previous elections and had not moved to new addresses.
