DAP calls on the Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, to reconsider and attend the Commonwealth Prime Ministers’ Conference in Melbourne, or send the Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Musa Hitam in his stead.

According to press reports, Malaysia will be the only country which will not be represented at the Melbourne Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference by its Prime Minister. Call on new Education Minister, Dr. Sulaiman Daud, to exert pressure on the British government to reduce fees for Malaysian student studying in the United Kingdom.

The drastic increase of school fees for overseas students in the United Kingdom has gravely hit Malaysian student in UK. This is a short-sighted British policy, which will do great harm to the continued close relationship between the two countries and damage the cultural ties established between Britishers and Malaysians because of educational facilities in the UK. DAP calls for a special government probe team to be sent to investigate into the working conditions of Malaysian workers in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries o protect Malaysian workers from exploitation, oppression and even threats to their very personal safety

Although last month, the Deputy Minister of Labour and Manpower, Datu K. Pathmanaban, gave a assurance to the Senate that Malaysian workers in the Middle East were working under satisfactory conditions, the revelations of working conditions of Malaysians in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries following the tragic and mysterious death of former Saudi Arabian airlines air hostess, Chathrina Tan Suan Hong, 21, has shown that either Datuk Pathmanaban was deliberately misleading Parliament or he did not know what he was talking about. A few years ago, when Vietnamese in their hundreds of thousand sought escape from Vietnam, resulting in large numbers of them landing on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the Government set up a Special Task Force III (‘Vietnamese Illegal Immigrants’) to deal with the problem. Malaysians still can remember the announcement at one stage by the Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamed, that if any more Vietnamese refugees land in Malaysia without proper international resettlement arrangements, then Malaysia will adopt the policy ‘shoot to kill’. Kit Siang calls on Malaysian authorities to mend fences with Malaysian students in New Zealand

Parliamentary Opposition Leaders and DAP Secretary General, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, has called on the Malaysia High Commission and the Malaysia authorities to mend fence with Malaysia students in New Zealand and to re-establish a relationship of trust and confidence with Malaysian students there.

Mr. Lim said he was surprised to find that the Malaysian High Commission had been banned by the Students’ Union both of the Victoria University of Wellington and the Auckland University. The relationship between the Malaysia High Commission and the Malaysia Student unions with effective representation of the majority of Malaysian students in the various New Zealand universities were also very strained if not ruptured.
