Government should not invent new reasons to retain the ISA

DAP welcome the statement by Deputy Prime Minister, Ghaffar Baba, that the government would study whether the Internal Security Act could be withdrawn in view of the move by the Communist Party of Malaya to end its 41 – year – old armed struggle. However, we call on the government not invent new reasons to retain the ISA, in view of his statement that racialism was another justification for the ISA. DAP tables motion in Parliamentary to endorse the signing of the peace agreement with the CPM and to take the first steps to restore democratic freedoms and human rights removed during the 41 – year CPM armed struggle

Now that the Cabinet had yesterday endorsed the signing of an agreement with the Communist Party of Malay in the interest of the country’s security, peace, stability and prosperity, the next step is for Parliament to give ratification to the agreement to be signed in Haadyai on Saturday, Dec. 2. Ten DAP MPs cable appeal to Pardons Board to commute death sentence of Sim Kie Chon

On behalf of ten Dap Mps, I have sent and urgent cable to the Pardons Board appealing for its review and commutation of the death sentence of Sim Kie Chon, 28, who was convicted and sentenced to death under the Internal Security Act with possession of a firearm for which he had no license. He was convicted by the High Court on 14 June 1983, and the federal court dismissed his appeal on 1983. The DAP calls on the Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, to act with mercy and save three condemned youths from the gallows, especially as they had not taken any life or seriously injured another. Lim Ngi Chou was detained under the Internal Security Act

I call this press conference to urge on the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Musa HItam, to lift all restrictions on ex-detainee under the Internal Security Act, Lim Ngi Chou @Lim Geok Chye, who is suffering from a rare lung cancer, and to give all forms of assistance to send him overseas for medical treatment to save his life.

I have with me the family members of Lim Hgi Chou 31, a Nanyang University graduate in mathematics, formerly teaching in Confucian Chinese Secondary School (Independent). Lim Ngi Chou was detained under the Internal Security Act on 23rd Nov. 1979 and detained at the Taiping Detention Camp.

Ngi Chou had no known medical problems before his detention. I understand that Ngi Chou is now in a very critical condition, and that although he is now under the charge of the National Tuberculosis Centre in Jalan Pahang, Kuala Lumpur, it is beyond local medical expertise to save his life.
