DAP calls on Malacca State Government to withdraw its letter to Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

Speech by Parliamentary Opposition Leader, DAP Secretary-General and MP for Kota Melaka, Lim Kit Siang, at the DAP Melaka cca 3,000-People 18th Anniversary Dinner, held at Pay Fong Chinese Secondary School Ground on Sunday, 8th July 1984 at 9p.m. on the Special theme: “Can the Chinese in Malaysia preserve Bukit China in face of the Malacca State Government’s plan to level it?”

DAP calls on Malacca State Government to withdraw its letter to Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, rescind its decision to level and develop Bukit China, cancel the $2 million quit rent demand to allow the Chinese community to decide the fate of Bukit China without coercion or duress.

On October 5, 1983, the Malacca State Government wrote to the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the trustees of the largest Chinese cemetery outside China – Bukit China – stating its intention to develop the 104 acre burial ground into a housing and business area, and to remove and relocate the 12,500 graves on the hill. In the whole Bukit China affair, ever since the State Government communicated to the Chang Hoon Teng Temple, the Bukit China trustees, of its intention to level and develop Bukit China last October, the confirmation of by the Chief Minister, Datuk Abdul Rahim Thamby Cik, in the State Assembly in April of the Government’s plan to level and develop Bukit China, the reiteration by the Chief Minister last month to proceed with its plan as originally intended for Bukit China, the two MCA EXCO Members, Datuk Tee Cheng York and Datuk Lim Soo Kiang have been strangely and unusually quiet about the Bukit China issue. Land Acquisition and NEP Guarantees

Earlier at this parliamentary meeting, the DAP had given full support to the government in its legislative proposal to give Malay reserved land the same valuation as non-reserved land in government land acquisition exercises.

It is most shocking to read the comments of the Minister of Land and Regional Development, Datuk Rais Yatim, on the Selancar Empat scandal when he said that his ministry was inclined to accept the version of the Pahang CPO, SAC Mohamed Noor Khamis, that police investigations showed that there has been no criminal offences comitted and allegations of wrongful confinement, illegal detention, forced labour and criminal assault of workers at Selancar Empat were untrue. Datuk Rais also said that his ministry was inclined to accept the police investigations rather than other reports including those in the press of the situation in Selancar Empat.
