For the last few months, while the component Barisan Nasional parties like the MCA, Gerakan, MIC were engaged in an intense, no-holds-barred internal power struggle, the people’s political, economic, educational and cultural rights had suffered the greatest erosion and setbacks. Letter to Attorney-General, Tan Sri Abu Talib bin Othman, to take a stern view of the incident where DAP Malacca Assemblyman, Lai Keun Ban, was assaulted and insulted by several persons for carrying out his Assembly duties.

I have written to the Attorney-General, Tan Sri Abu Talib bin Othman, who is also the Public Prosecutor, to take a stern view and deal severely with the incident on Wednesday, 25.5.1983, where the DAP Malacca Assemblyman for Durian Daun, Sdr. Lai Keun Ban, was surrounded by a crowd and assaulted and abused for speaking up for the people’s interest in the Malacca Assembly. DAP calls for a orientation course for all state government employees to instill in them the sense of service, courtesy and commitment to the welfare of the rakyat.

Speech by Parliamentary Opposition Leader, DAP Secretary- General and MP for Petaling and Assemblyman for Kubu, Lim Kit Siang, in the Malacca State Assembly on Tuesday, 29th Sept. 1981 on the motion to congratulate Dr. Mahathir and Dato Musa on their appointment as Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister respectively and to express confidence and support for them.

DAP calls for a orientation course for all state government employees to instill in them the sense of service, courtesy and commitment to the welfare of the rakyat.

When the new leadership of Dr. Mahathir and Datuk Musa took over the reins of national government, great emphasis was given to the creation of a ‘clean, efficient and smooth’ government- ‘berseh, cekap and licin’. A Biased Report Of Committee Of Privileges

(Speech by Parliamentary Opposition Leader, DAP Secretary- General and MP for Petaling and Assemblyman for Kubu, Lim Kit Siang, in the Malacca State Assembly on Tuesday, 29th Sept. 1981 on the motion to accept the Report of the Committee of Privileges that he had been absent without leave from the Assembly for six months)

DAP rejects the Report of the Committee of Privileges as being biased and prejudiced, and drafted to support a predetermined conclusion in utter disregard of general parliamentary practice and the Malacca Constitution

The house is asked to accept the Report of the Committee of Privileges tabled on 28th April 1981 with the finding that as I was absent from the State Assembly meeting on 23rd Sept. 1980, under Article 17 of the Malacca Constitution, I had been “without the leave of the Assembly absent from every sitting thereof for a period of six month” and that my Assembly seat of Kubu may be declared vacant. The chief Minister said that the Malacca Barisan National move to declare my Kubu seat vacant is based on law and not personal.
He said that the Kubu seat could be declared vacant because I had been absent without permission from the Speaker for six months.
