Speech by Ketua Pembangkang and DAP Member of Parliament for Kota Melaka, Lim Kit Siang, when introducing a motion to cut $10 from the Development Estimates for the Ministry of Health for 1976 on: 30th July1976

Why has the Ministry of Health hushed up the 1973 Malacca Hospital mass blood poisoning deaths without either a full public inquiry or disclosure of the negligence causing so many unnecessary deaths?

In the previous session of Parliament, I had on 14th January 1974 during the Committee Stage of the 1974 Budget, moved a $10 cut of the Ministry of Health’s salary over the first mass deaths in the Malacca Hospital in July/August 1973. Ketua Pembangkang and DAP Secretary-General, Lim Kit Siang

Call for a joint high-level inquiry by Central and State Government into the industrialisation setbacks in Malacca State
The Malacca State has suffered severe setbacks in the field of industrialisation in 1975. it is all the more regrettable that the State Government has refused to admit this reality and has tried instead to present a picture of roses about great progress in industrialisation this year.

Throughout this year, the various industries in Malacca had carried out retrenchment exercises, or dismissals and termination of service of employees on the most flimsy grounds to reduce their work-force. The 1976 Malacca Budget is a budget of extravagance in a time of austerity

For the past few months, the country has resounded with calls by the Government leaders, headed by the Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak, for nation-wide austerity by all governments, public authorities, statutory boards and the Malaysian public to help tide over the tight financial position faced by the government and country because of the prolonged economic recession in Malaysia. DAP want Municipal rates increases removed

DAP want Municipal rates increases removed

The National Front Government must prove that it is on the ride of the poor, and not the agents of the rich. The Malacca Municipality’s unjustified increase of garbage and conservancy rates by some 100% is another example of its failure to understand the hardships of the poor, especially at this time of unending inflation. Indeed, if the Municipality cannot help the poor to lessen their economic burdens, the least they expect of the Municipality is that it would not increase their hardships.

The Malacca Municipality should not ignore the pleas and hardships of the people of Malacca and should without any more delay withdraw the increases in Municipal rates.
