Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, when speaking to members of the DAP Sitiawan Branch in Pekan Gurney, Sitiawan on Friday, 19th May 1972 at 7.30 p.m.

Call to DAP members and supporters throughout the country to rededicate themselves to the DAP cause for a Malaysian Malaysia.

We meet here tonight not to mourn over the defection and treachery of Richard Ho, who for his own selfish personal interest has dedicate ourselves to the DAP struggle interests and rights, but to rededicate ourselves to the DAP struggle in Setiawan and in Malaysia for a Malaysian Malaysia. Call to crusade for a Malaysian Malaysia until eventual victory

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, when speaking to DAP members, election workers and supporters for the Ulu Selangor by-election at the DAP Kuala Kubu Bahru by-election head office on the night of Nomination, 18th May 1972 at 7.30 p.m.

Call to crusade for a Malaysian Malaysia until eventual victory

The Ulu Selangor Parliamentary seat has traditionally been regarded as a safe seat for the MCA.

This is why in the previous general elections, this seat has always been reserved for the pawns and puppets like Tan Sri Ong Yoke Lin and Tan Sri Khaw Kai Boh who would have been decisively defeated if they had stood in other areas. Malaysianisation of top editorial posts in Malaysian press

Malaysianisation of top editorial posts in Malaysian press

As a former newspaperman myself, I fully support the memorandum submitted by the National Union of Journalists to the Prime Minister on expatriate journalists in the Malaysian press.

Over the years, the Malaysian newspaper who have non-citizens in the top editorial posts have not made any serious attempt to train local, talented journalists to take over all key editorial posts.

Malaysia has been independent for 15 years and it is clearly unacceptable that the key posts in a sensitive and important sector as the press should continue to be in the hands of expatriates.

The Government should require the newspapers to lay down a programme of full Malaysianisation of all key editorial posts in Malaysian press.

The Second Malaysia Plan 1970-1975

First of all, this House should note that we are not debating the Development Plan for the next five years, but for the next four-and-a-half years. Six months of this Five-year Second Malaysia Plan have already passed before this Plan comes before this House. This speaks most eloquently for the authoritarian nature of the present government, which professes democratic rule. What this House and co country think, feel and decide do not matter. The Alliance Government has decided, and this is that.

The Second Five-year Plan opens with this passage:

“National unity is the over-riding objective of the country…..This direction toward national unity and progress is fundamental to the New Economic Policy. The Second Malaysia Plan, based on this Policy, is designed to facilitate the achievement of the national objective”. Continue reading The Second Malaysia Plan 1970-1975

We have not become a nation of Malaysians

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the second anniversary dinner of the Pudu DAP Branch in Kuala Lumpur on Nov. 3, 1970 at 7.30p.m.

Although our country achieved independence in 1957, and is a member of the United Nations, recognised internationally as a separate political, legal and geographical entity, we have not become a nation of Malaysians.

Over the years, Malaysians have felt, thought and acted more as Malays, Chinese and Indians, rather than as Malaysians.

The blunt and tragic truth is that with the passing of years, more and more Malaysians are thinking less and less in Malaysian terms, and more and more in terms of their own race. Continue reading We have not become a nation of Malaysians

All party forum on Rukunegara

Statement by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a tea party given by Batu Pahat DAP at Chinese Chamber of Commerce building on Thursday, 22nd Oct. 1970 at 7p.m.

All party forum on Rukunegara

I have today sent out letters to all political parties in Malaysia inviting them to take part in an all-party forum on “How to make the Rukun Negara a more meaningful and effective instrument in the nation building of a united multi-racial Malaysian nation.”

The Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak, speaking as Director of Operations in a radio broadcast in Sarawak on 20th august 1969 said the national ideology would not be imposed on the nation but would be discussed by everybody before it was adopted. Continue reading All party forum on Rukunegara

RUKUNEGARA

Statement by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Lim Kit Siang, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a press conference at Penang Bayan Lepas airport on Wednesday, 14 Oct. 1970 at 9.30p.m.

RUKUNEGARA

The Alliance government and the Gerakan Ra’ayat Malaysia have jointly worked out a national ideology, or Rukunegara, for the people of Malaysia.

We in the DAP have no part in the formulation of the Rukunegara. But as far back as in 1966, I have had the opportunity to write in the DAP organ, the Rocket, that the people of Malaysia should reach a common set of fundamental objectives on nation building, a national consensus, to ensure a united, peaceful and prosperous Malaysia. A letter to the Chairman of DAP, Dr. Chen Man Hin- The suit on the NOC’s decision regarding consultative committee

Below is the complete text of a letter dated 27.12.69 form Comrade Lim Kit Siang , our detained Secretary-General, to our Party Chairman Dr. Chen Man Hin.
Muar Detention Camp
27.12.69
Dear Chen,

The NOC decision are re: consultative committee is negative. I must confess that I had entertained some hopes that the leaders in power are genuinely trying to lead Malaysia out of the morass of racialism, bigotry and reaction, onto the highlands of multi-racial nationhood, social justice, prosperity, in working hand-in-hand with Opposition parties and leaders.

But the decision has proved me wrong, alas. Continue reading A letter to the Chairman of DAP, Dr. Chen Man Hin- The suit on the NOC’s decision regarding consultative committee

A letter to the Chairman of DAP, Dr. Chen Man Hin- The May 13 Disturbances

Below is the complete text of a letter dated 31.12.69 form Comrade Lim Kit Siang , our detained Secretary-General, to our Party Chairman Dr. Chen Man Hin.

Dear Chen,

Today marks the end of the Sixties.

The decade which opened up with the end of the first Emergency has ended with the beginning of the Second Emergency. The decade which was ushered in by the first Parliamentary elections is now followed out by the suspension of parliamentary democracy and the solemn pronouncement that ‘democracy is dead.’ The decade which started with the boast that Malaysia was model of racial peace, goodwill and harmony closed with the shattering of the myth which mistook the absence of racial conflict for Malaysian identity and solidarity. Letter (2) to the Prime Minister from Muar Detention Camp

Lim Kit Siang, M.P
c/o Detention Camp,
Muar, Malaysia.
14th August 1969

Y.T.M Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-haj
Prime Minister,
Malaysia

Dear Prime Minister,

The absence of a national dialogue in the conduct of national affairs and the formulation and implementation of national policies must be a cause of gave concern for all thinking Malaysians.

No battle for the hearts and minds of the people can be won through a diktat. Only a dialogue, a democratic and responsible debate and discussion, can ensure this.

The establishment of the Department of National Unity is a welcome indication of the government’s belated awareness of the need to take a positive approach to identify and solve the complexity of racial problems confronting Malaysia since Merdeka.
