Letter to the Prime Minister from Muar Detention Camp

Lim Kit Siang, M.P
c/o Detention Camp,
Muar, Malaysia.
5th August 1969

Y.T.M Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-haj
Prime Minister,
Malaysia

Dear Prime Minister,

I feel it my duty as a Malaysian citizen and Member of Parliament to write to you about my anxieties for the future of Malaysia.

The tragedy of May 13 disturbances has raised a big question mark as to whether Malaysia could hold together as a nation and her citizens as one people.

Close in the wake of the May 13 disturbances, the Malayan Communist Party has reactivated its armed struggle at the Malaysian-Thai border. Continue reading Letter to the Prime Minister from Muar Detention Camp

An Open Letter to the Voters of Malacca by Lim Kit Siang, DAP Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka May 7, 1969

Dear People and Voters of Malacca,

I wish first of all to thank the people and voters of Malacca who have shown me great kindness and given me great encouragement and support since Nomination Day, April 5.

This has given the DAP and myself confidence that after 10th May, Malacca will emerge as one of the foremost capitals of the Malaysian Malaysia campaign and regain her historic role of 500 years ago, when she was a leader of ideas, hub of commerce and centre of culture.

Alliance and its candidate, Mr. Koh Kim Leng

The Bandar Melaka Parliamentary constituency is a three cornered contest. Continue reading An Open Letter to the Voters of Malacca by Lim Kit Siang, DAP Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka May 7, 1969

The meaning of a Malaysian Malaysia

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a mammoth DAP public rally at Suleiman Court, Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, 7th May 1969

The meaning of a Malaysian Malaysia

Speaking at a public rally at Kangar two days ago, the Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman said: “Jawatan Perdana Menteri Malaysia sa-lama2-nya akian di-sandang oleh sa-orang berugama Islam kerana ‘Kuasa politik di-negeri ini ada-lah di-dalam tangan orang Melayu.’ (Berita Harian, 7 May). In other words, the office of Prime Minister in Malaysia will always be hold by a Muslim because political power in this country is in the hands of the Malays. Party Rakyat’s policy in language, education and culture

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a Dap Public Rally at Klebang Kechil on May 6 at 9p.m:

At a public rally in Batu Pahat, the Secretary-General of the University of Malaya Students’ Union and brother of the National Vice President of Party Rakyat, Syed Hamid Ali, accused the DAP of being a ‘communal party’ for seeking official language status for the Chinese language.

I am not surprised by Syed Hamid Ali’s statement, because he is only repeating the Party Rakyat stand.

The Party Rakyat, which has as its symbol Sukarno’s Indonesia bull wants only one language to exist in Malaysia. Syed Hamid Ali, like his brother and fellow-members in the Party Rakyat, including Inche Hasnul, want Chinese schools to be eliminated.

This is the main reason why the Labour Party broke off with the Party Rakyat, and led to the collapse of the Socialist Front. This is why the present bull’s head minus the pen and wheel symbol of the Labour Party. Continue reading Party Rakyat’s policy in language, education and culture

Why is Inche Hasnul bin Hadi defending Sukarno’s persecution of Chinese in Indonesia?

Statement by Dap Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, on 4th May 1969

At the Party Rakyat public rally at Tranquerah, the Party Rakyat Parliamentary candidate, Inche Hasnul bin Hadi, has defended Sukarno’s persecution of Chinese in Indonesia.

Inche Hasnul claimed that Sukarno was not anti-Chinese. Then could Inche Hasnul explain why Sukarno persecuted the Chinese mercilessly in Indonesia, and won for himself the name as the greatest persecutor of Chinese, not only in Indonesia, but in South East Asia and the world.

Instead of condemning Sukarno’s anti-Chinese persecutions, Inche Hasnul bin Hadi was only praise and admiration for Sukarno. It is clear Inche Hasnul fully supported Sukarno, who stripped the Chinese in Indonesia of their basic rights, expropriated their property, removed their Chinese names and forced them to use Indonesian names, like Rudi Hartono, the world famous badminton player, who is an Indonesian of Chinese origin, closed down Chinese schools, eliminated Chinese newspapers, and even massacred and slaughtered the Chinese. Party Rakyat’s tactics

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the 10th DAP Public Rally at Wolferstan Road on 3rd May 1969 at 9p.m:

Last Tuesday, some officials of the University of Malaya Students’ Union held a mass rally in Malacca.

Those who attended the rally came away with one common thought: The student rally could well have been a Party Rakyat rally. The things that were said at the student rally were the same things which had been said at previous Party Rakyat rallies.

It is common knowledge that the Party Rakyat helped to organise the student rally. I also know that Inche Hasnul is trying to arrange another student rally in Malacca to help his election campaign.

This is not surprising. The Secretary-General of the Student’s Union, Syed Hamid Ali is known to me. He is the brother of Syed Husin Ali, who is the National Vice Chairman of Party Rakyat. Syed Hamid Ali is himself a member of Party Rakyat, and is in fact Party Rakyat’s chief recruiting officer in the University of Malaya. Continue reading Party Rakyat’s tactics

The education issue on May 10

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP Public Rally at Ayer Salak, Bukit Rambai, on 30th April 1969:

On May 10, when the voters go to cast their votes, they will also decide whether they endorse the ‘one nation, one language’ education policy of the exponents of a Malay Malaysia, and Indonesia Malaysia or the education policy of the advocates of Malaysian Malaysia.

The Alliance, through Mr. Koh Kim Leng’s Abdul Rahman Talib Education Report of 1960, has declared unequivocally that the Alliance want to close down all Chinese, Tamil and English schools, both at primary and secondary levels, and convert them into purely Malay schools.

The Party Rakyat’s education policy is exactly the same as the Alliance’s ‘one nation, one language’ education policy. The Party Rakyat in fact fully supports Mr. Koh Kim Leng’s Abdul Rahman Talib Education Report.

In its 1969 General Elections Manifesto, the Party Rakyat declared that they want “an education system with Malay as the main medium, use Malay as a medium for as many subjects as possible, abolish the teaching of English as a subject at primary level, encourage the learning of languages of the people, provide other international and scientific languages like French, Russian, German and Chinese as subjects at secondary level.” Continue reading The education issue on May 10

I will not withdraw a single word that I have said

Press Statement by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, on 21st April 1969:

Mr. Koh Kim Leng is at liberty to institute whatever legal proceedings, but I will not withdraw a single word that I have said

Mr. Koh Kim Leng and Alliance politician are very fond of issuing threats because they do not have reason, argument and facts to match the DAP’s reasons and arguments.

Mr. Koh Kim Leng has again resorted to threats against me. In a statement yesterday, Mr.Koh Kim Leng accused me of distorting his speech at the Alliance rally at Hereen Street, where he said that the Chinese will lose their citizenship if they vote for the opposition.

Mr. Koh now explains that what he meant was that if he and the Alliance candidates lose, and the PMIP wins, then the Chinese will lose their citizenship.

This is Mr. Koh’s present explanation of his speech made at Hereen Street on April 14. I reject his explanation. I am satisfied that Mr. Koh Kim Leng has blatantly threatened the Chinese in Malaysia that if they don’t vote for the Alliance and himself, they stand to lose their citizenship. I have said that this is downright blackmail, and a most shameful act, and I stand by every word I have said. Continue reading I will not withdraw a single word that I have said

Lim Kit Siang wants every MCA Candidate to make his stand on Lew Sip Hon’s Aziz Commission Report

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP Public Rally in Muar on Friday, 18th April 1969 at 8p.m.

Lim Kit Siang wants every MCA Candidate to make his stand on Lew Sip Hon’s Aziz Commission Report and declare what are the recommendations they consider as unreasonable, and for which they are prepared to resign from MCA if implemented.

MCA Candidates everywhere are saying that if there are recommendations in Lew Sip Hon’s Aziz Commission Report which are unfair and detrimental to Chinese education and teachers, the Alliance government will not implement them. But the voters of Malaysia cannot be so easily fooled and deceived by the MCA candidates.

If the MCA Candidates are sincere in the above statement, then I want every MCA Candidate to let the Malaysian public know what each of them think are the unreasonable provisions in what each of them think are the unreasonable provisions in Lew Sip Hon’s Aziz Commission Report which the Alliance Government will not implement, or if the government implements, for which they are prepared to resign from the MCA in protest. The DAP is not an anti-Malay party: it is a pro-Malaysian party

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP Public Rally at Bukit Rambai on April 18, 1969 at 10 p.m.:

The Alliance and the MCA used to accuse the DAP of being anti-Malay because they claim we dare not contest in predominantly Malay constituency.

But in this general elections, we are contesting in several predominantly Malay constituencies, one of which is Bukit Rambai State Constituency in Malacca. This thoroughly exposes the mischief and malice of Alliance and MCA accusations.
What shocks me is that Tun Tan Siew Sin, the MCA President, should condemn the DAP for Contesting in a predominantly Malay constituency. Tun Tan said the DAP should not have fielded a candidate.

If Tun Tan Siew Sin is right, then he himself should never have run away from Bandar Melaka Parliamentary constituency to Melaka Tengah Parliamentary constituency, and rely on UMNO’s Malay votes to get him elected. Tun Tan should fight in Bandar Melaka, the town of his birth, and let the voters of Bandar Melaka decide whether his own claim is true, that he is the leader of Malaysian Chinese.

But Tun Tan Siew Sin dares not to do this, because he knows very well that if he had contested in Bandar Melaka Parliamentary constituency, he would not be able to retain his deposit even. Continue reading The DAP is not an anti-Malay party: it is a pro-Malaysian party
