Tunku’s reaction to the book ‘Contemporary Issues on Malaysian Religions’ most surprising and uncharacteristic

Tunku Abdul Rahman’s reaction to the book ‘Contemporary Issues on Malaysian Religions’ and the reasons he gave in his weekly column ‘As I See It’ for staying away from the book-launching ceremony although he had earlier consented to grace the occasion, is surprising and uncharacteristic of Bapa Malaysia. DAP on the Ministries of Education and Fate motion broadcasting to introduce educational programmes’ in Chinese and Tamil for students in Chinese and Tamil Primary Schools.

The educational T.V. programmes that are new telecast over T.V. Malaysia fer school students are only in Bahasa Malaysia and English.

The commission in presenting educational programmes in Chinese and Tamil languages is clearly inconsistent with the Government’s stated intention not to convert Chinese and Tamil primary schools in socerdance with Clause 21 (2) of the 1961 Education Act. Thung Pau’s journalists who are on strike

DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, issued the following statement when visiting the Thung Pau’s journalists who are on strike.

As a former working journalist and a journalist union official, I can fully sympathise with the Thung Pau reporters who have gone on strike for the last 5 days. Unless they have exhausted all possible avenues to reach a just settlement of the outstanding issues, they would not have resorted to their ultimate weapon in going on a strike.

That the dispute had already lasted 16 months since the very formation of the Thung Pau chapel on September, 1972 is, in my view evidence to infinite patience and sense of responsibility with which the trade union officials in the National Union of Journalists and the Thung Pau chapel have tried to reach understanding with the management. Import duties on Mandarin oranges

Press Statement by Ketua Pembangkang & Secretary-General, Mr. Lim Kit Siang on 28.12.1973

Call for lifting of import duties on Mandarin oranges to enable poor and low-income Malaysian Chinese to celebrate Chinese New Year

The MCA is holding a special conference for all its branch officials in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow to discuss the issues and problems facing the people of Malaysia, in particular the Malaysian Chinese.

What is needed is not more discussion, but resolution and action to help the ordinary people in the country to lead a better and more fulfilling life.

There are so many things which should be done immediately, and which can be done immediately, both by MCA Ministers and other Alliance Ministers. The only question is whether these Ministers have the will, ability and determination to do what is right by the people.

For instance, the Finance Minister, Tun Tan Siew Sin, can immediately do the following things: Continue reading Import duties on Mandarin oranges

Call on government to democratise and liberalise its mass media policy to permit freedom of speech and information

Speech by DAP Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, in the Dewan Rakyat on 24 Jan 1973

Call on government to democratise and liberalise its mass media policy to permit freedom of speech and information and fair television time for all language programmes

I refer to B.36 sub-head 1100: Gaji and Upahan untok ranchangan atau programming, under the Ministry of Broadcasting.

Since September last year, for almost every night, Television Malaysia telecasts the same programes of Bahasa Malaysia news and Peristiwa (television news magazine) over both channels at the same time.

This means that for 37 minutes every night, a television viewer is offered the same fare over both channels, and he has no escape whatsoever from the blatant government propaganda in the Peristiwa programme. Whether he turns on the first or second channel, he sees the same Minister planting a tree, cutting a ribbon or making a speech. What made matters worse is that this is done during the prime television time between 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.

The worst victims are the Chinese and Tamil film programmes which are interrupted no less than three times, and sometimes four times, by other programmes – apart from television advertisement interruptions. DAP calls for all–party meeting to allocate radio and TV time during general elections

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the Perak DAP State Committee Meeting at Ipoh, on Tuesday, 11th March 1969 at 7.30p.m.

During the forthcoming general elections campaign, the competing political parties should get fair allocation of radio and television time to explain their party platform and programmes to the electorate.

In the past, the Alliance party unilaterally and arbitrarily allocated radio time to the various political parties, with it getting the lion’s share. Apart from other semi-political radio broadcasts, the entire radio network was virtually devoted to alliance propaganda during the general elections.

This is unfair and undemocratic. During general elections, the radio and television facilities should be fairly available to the various competing political parties to put their views to the electorate so that the voters can choose between the various parties and platforms with an informed mind.

The DAP therefore calls for the setting up of an all party committee to allocate radio and television time to the various competing parties in the general elections, on fair and equitable and democratic basis. This should be decided now, and not wait until after Nomination Day. Continue reading DAP calls for all–party meeting to allocate radio and TV time during general elections
