Tunku’s reaction to the book ‘Contemporary Issues on Malaysian Religions’ most surprising and uncharacteristic

Tunku Abdul Rahman’s reaction to the book ‘Contemporary Issues on Malaysian Religions’ and the reasons he gave in his weekly column ‘As I See It’ for staying away from the book-launching ceremony although he had earlier consented to grace the occasion, is surprising and uncharacteristic of Bapa Malaysia. Daim’s Maiden Budget

Speech by Parliament Opposition Leader, DAP Secretary-General and MP for Kota Melaka, Lim Kit Siang in Dewan Rakyat on the 1985 budget on October 24, 1984

I congratulate the new Finance Minister, Daim Zainuddin, for delivering his maiden Budget last Friday – and if I am not mistaken, it was also his maiden speech in Parliament.

Daim Zainuddin’s budget has another distinction in that it provoked a public protest and demonstration in Johore Bahru on Sunday for its being a “rich man budget”, at a period of deteriorating economy and worsening poverty arising from escalating prices of essential foodstuff and scarcity of low-cost housing. One Language, One Culture

On behalf of the DAP, I rise to thank His Majesty for His Royal Address yesterday in conjunction with the official opening of the First Session of the Sixth Parliament, setting out the Government’s policy statement of the year.

Right from the beginning, it is obvious that the Barisan Nasional is still in a euphoria at its success in the April General Elections and could not resist the temptation to indulge in self-praise. Continue reading One Language, One Culture

Bintulu-isation of NEP

(Speech by the Parliamentary Leader, DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Petaling, Lim Kit Siang, in the Dewan Rakyat on the Royal Address on March 18, 1982)

We are entering the second decade of the New Economic Policy, and on the threshold of launching the Fourth Malaysia Five Year Plan. Central to the success of the New Economic Policy as the government’s basic strategy to create a united, peaceful and prosperous Malaysia is the strict adherence of the government at all levels to the NEP’s cardinal tenets that “no particular group would experience any loss or feel any sense of deprivation of its rights, privileges, income, job or opportunity” and that there would be no robbing Peter to pay Paul’.

If it gains general currency that these cardinal tenets of the NEP are not respected, then irreparable harm would be done to the entire process of nation building in Malaysia. Continue reading Bintulu-isation of NEP

Malaysian Chinese – Indispensable Partner and Shaper of Malaysia’s Destiny

There has recently been considerable soul-searching among the Malaysian Chinese about their place and future in Malaysia. Some, particularly the professionals like doctors, have despaired, sold their practice uprooted their families and emigrated. The overwhelming majority, however, cannot and would not emigrate.
