Call on the voters of Kajang to vote for the DAP Charter for New Village Revolution on 3.11.1973

For over 20 years, through four Five-Year Plans of the Alliance Government – the First Malaya Plan 1956-60, the Second Malaya Plan 1961-65, the First Malaysia Plan 1966-70 and the Second Malaysia Plan 1971-75 – the 900000 new villagers in Malaysia have been ignored, neglected, starved of development funds and excluded from the mainstream of economic, social, educational and cultural development.

The 900000 new villagers suffered in silence for one full generation. What was more tragic was that not only had the government forgotten them, the people and the nation as a whole had also forgotten them and did not know or were not concerned that the 900000 new villagers were economically, socially, educationally and culturally deprived.

The DAP decided that the suffering by one full generation of new villagers was enough, and that the second generation of new villagers should not re-live the miseries and neglect of their people. DAP calls for increase of government expenditure for higher education to ensure that every Malaysian student who is qualifies get a place in University.

One of the biggest educational problems facing Malaysia today is the paradox where more and more Malaysian students, with the intelligence and qualifications, could not find places and opportunities for higher education on Malaysia.

Many of our youths, who have achieved excellent academic results in the Malaysian Certificate of Education, and who would have gone on to attain professional qualifications with distinction, are rotting away in their homes because they cannot get into pre-university or university classes. Call for urgent Ministry of Education action to upgrade the quality and standard of teaching in Malaysian primary schools.

Three months ago, the country was gravely shaken by the by news that 14,400 MCE candidates last year failed led in the MCE examination although they are bright, intelligent and hardworking students- just because of the inexplicable failure in Bahasa Malaysia.

Genuinely help uplift the lot of the 900,000 new villagers

Speech by Opposition Leader and DAP Secretary-General, Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP Public Rally at Bukit Rambai, Malacca on Sunday, 17th June 1973 at 8 p.m.

Advice to Mr. Lee San Choon not to use his Ministerial office for personal political capital but genuinely to help uplift the lot of the 900,000 new villagers

As a result of the public agitation mounted by the DAP in 1971, spearheaded by the DAP National New Villages Sub-Committee, the Government succumbed to public pressure and appointed a new Minister specially charged with the upliftment of the economic lot of the 900,000 new villagers in the country.

When Dr. Lim Keng Yaik became the Minister of Special Functions on Jan. 1, 1972, there was expectation that at last, after 20 years of government neglect and deprivation of development funds, the 450 new villagers would be brought into the mainstream of national development and growth.

The former Minister made highly publicized tours throughout the country, and in fact, during his visit to the Machap Umbu New Village in Malacca, he was hailed as a ‘Magistrate Pao Reborn’. Continue reading Genuinely help uplift the lot of the 900,000 new villagers

Call on Dr. Lim Keng Yaik to stop making promises but to get ample funds for new village upliftment

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, to party members when touring the Penchala state constituency in the company of the DAP State Assemblyman for Penchala, Mr. Hor Cheok Foon, on Sunday, 11th March 1973.

Three days ago, the Minister for Special Functions, Dr. Lim Keng Yaik, announced that his Ministry would provide $280,000 to convert 44 new villages in Negri Sembilan into integrated townships.

Dr. Lim Keng Yaik made great boast about the allocation of funds, and it is understandable, as until now, for the last 15 months of his term as Minister, he was only given enough money to meet his own salary and that of his staff without a single cent for the new village development which he was entrusted with.

But when we consider the figure of $280,000 to convert 44 backward new villages into thriving towns, it is indeed a ridiculous idea. This works out to about $6,000 for each new village.
