Ghaffar Baba confirms that the Bank Negara’s proposal for the 24 deposit-taking co-operatives was that depositors can only 50 per cent of their deposits, while the other 50 per cent is converted into equity.

I paid a courtesy call on the deputy Prime Minister, Ghaffar Baba, in his office this morning, and I discussed with him a wide range of subjects, including the co-operatives crisis, in particular the future of the 24 deposit-taking co-operatives; the LPN mess and the grievances and problems it has created for farmers, millers and retailers; the illegal Indonesian immigrant problem; the new villages; the economy and national unity. Yap Ah Ngau, DAP Petaling Liaison Committee Member, Sdr. Tai Sin Ng, to meet the residents and find out their problems, I have written to the Petaling Jaya Municipality Yang di-Pertua, Encik Abdullah bin Satar, urging that various urgent socio-economic problems of the people in Sungei Way New Village should be immediately attended to. This had been a noteworthy weekend. On Saturday night, the Bemban new village DAP Branch was opened in Batu Gajah, followed by a successful dinner attended by some 400 villagers.

Speech by DAP Sectary-General and Ketua Pembangkang, Lim Kit Siang, at the Ampang DAP Branch, Kuala Lumpur, on Sunday, 22nd August 1976 at 7.30 p.m.

DAP calls for a 20-fold increase in the development expenditures for the 460 new villages under the Third Malaysia Plan to (i) make up for the neglect of development needs of new villages for one generation and (ii) to bring the new villages fully into the mainstream of national development

The Third Malaysia Plan 1976-1980 provides for only $19 million for development of the 460 new villages for the next five years.

Tun Razak promises to investigate into corrupt practices and cheating of 1,500 Machap Umboo new villagers of their rightful compensation for government land acquisition

I met the Prime Minister, Tun Razak, in Parliament on Monday, and reported to him of corrupt practices in the question of compensation to the New Villagers of Machap Umboo New Village, as the entire village is being acquired by the State Water Authority for the Durian Tunggal water scheme. Some 1,500 people are affected by this scheme. Machap Umboo is about 18 miles from the Malacca town.

When I visited the Machap Umboo new village on 10th July, o found that the new villagers there were being cheated of their rightful compensation from the government. The majority of the Machap Umboo new villagers were ignorant of their rights. As a result, they were taken advantage of by a racket which came to tell them that they would get very low compensation for their houses, but that if they would pay 10% commission to ‘middle-men’ out of the total compensation after they had been raise upwards, the government would compensate them very much more.
