Malaysians have a right to know whether Dr. Mahathir Mohamed or Tun Hussien Onn is telling the truth about Cabinet approval for the 1981 Maminco tin-buying operation, which involved a loss of $660 million.

Malaysians are very concerned about the conflicting version between Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed and Tun Hussien Onn on whether the Cabinet had in 1980 given approval for the MAMINCO mysterious tin-buying in the London market in 1981, resulting in a $660 million loss to the country. MCA President Datuk Dr.Ling Liong Sik said yesterday that the UMNO-MCA row over the Selangor MCA resolution was resolved at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting, with the Cabinet accepting that Selangor MCA resolution was not intended to question the special status of the Malays as enshrined in the Constitution, and the agreement that labeling non-Malay Malaysians as pendatang should be stopped. The DAP Parliamentary Group has decided to form a Parliamentary Reform Study Group because we feel that on the occasion of the forthcoming 30th anniversary of Malaysian nationhood, one of the most neglected areas of our political system- parliamentary reforms- must be addressed seriously. As the Government has shown no interest whatsoever in taking the initiative to undertake comprehensive study of needed parliamentary reforms, the DAP as a responsible Opposition has decided to fill this gap to the best of our ability. DAP offers its co-operation to Government to resolve the deepening crisis of confidence which is impeding economic recovery, undermining national unity and destroying public confidence in Malaysia’s future.

Malaysia held its seventh parliamentary general elections on August 3, and as the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, said in his UMNO Presidential Address on 19th Sept. 1986, it was UMNO’s “past-ever” election success since UMNO was established and the country gained Independence. UMNO won 34 out of 35 seats in 1995, winning 97 per cent of the seats contested while in 1986, UMNO won 83 out of the 84 seats, winning nearly 99 per cent of the seats it contested.
