The Minister for Housing and Local Government, Datuk Dr. Ting Chew Peh, said in Penang yesterday that there must be a timeframe to phase out rent-controlled buildings and the repeal of the Rent Control Act, and he talked in terms of the total phasing out of the Rent Control Act in three to five years. The people of Penang are disappointed by the weak and spineless stand of the Penang Chief Minister, Dr. Koh Tsu Koon in the Penang State Assembly yesterday that although the State Government would make a representation to the Election Commission, it would not object to the unfair, undemocratic and unconstitutional redelineation of electoral constituencies, particularly the constitutional scandal of the Election Commission completing its review of the electoral constituencies not only for the 11 Parliamentary and 33 State Assembly constituencies in Penang but for all 165 Parliamentary constituencies and 452 State Assembly constituencies in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah in a matter of 24 hours! The Penang Police is to be highly commended for its swift and successful action in apprehending the three Indonesian immigrants who had been responsible for a spate of armed robberies and crimes, including the gang-rape of a 19-year-old store clerk in her Island Glades home. This is indeed a feather in the cap of the Penang Police. Dr. Koh Tsu Koon has been Penang Chief Minister for 17 months. His greatest disappointment is that he has failed to live up to his promise when he entered politics, which is to ‘attack into the Barisan Nasional to rectify the Barisan Nasional’.
