DAP proposes that National Trust Fund Bill he referred to Select Committee

DAP proposes that National Trust Fund Bill he referred to Select Committee as government has not convinced MPs, both Opposition as well as Barisan Nasional, that there could not be massive abuses, breach of trust or corruption as happened in Maminco, EPF-Makuwasa, UMBC, BMF and North-South Highway scandals in the administration of the National Trust Fund which will be a multi-billion dollar Trust Fund.

DAP offers its co-operation to Government to resolve the deepening crisis of confidence which is impeding economic recovery, undermining national unity and destroying public confidence in Malaysia’s future.

Malaysia held its seventh parliamentary general elections on August 3, and as the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, said in his UMNO Presidential Address on 19th Sept. 1986, it was UMNO’s “past-ever” election success since UMNO was established and the country gained Independence. UMNO won 34 out of 35 seats in 1995, winning 97 per cent of the seats contested while in 1986, UMNO won 83 out of the 84 seats, winning nearly 99 per cent of the seats it contested. Is a Government which is not prepared to take firm action against the criminals and crooks in the BMF, Co-operative Finance, Pan El and many other scandals qualified to instill moral values to prevent the occurrence of such scandals?

The Prime minister, Datuk Seri Dr, Mahathir Mohamed, told Malaysian students in New York yesterday that the government would require all Malaysian school-leavers to undergo physical and spiritual training to inculcate in them moral values, before they are employed or allowed to go for further studies abroad. Call on Government to give an assurance that it would not proceed with its proposal to amend the Official Secrets Act to impose amendatory one-year jail sentence for all offences under the Act when Parliament re-opens in October.

I find the National Day message of the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamed, disturbing in many respects.

For instance, Dr. Mahathir had said that Malaysians must not use the freedom of the press, “supposedly to exist in the West, to assess our mass media”.
