DAP to hold protest demonstrations in four toll gates at Federal Territory, Sungei Besi Plaza (Selangor), Seremban and Ayer Keroh (Malacca) simultaneously on Thursday at 8.30 a.m. and calls on motorists and highway users to express support by sounding the horms to protest against 100% toll rate increase

The DAP will hold protest demonstration at four toll gates at Kepong Interchange (KL), Sungei Besi toll plaza (Selangor) Seremban and Ayer Keroh (Malacca) simultaneously at 8.30 a.. on Thursday, 13.8.1987 to protest against the arbitrary and unjustifiable 100% increase in the highway toll rates. I call on all motorists and other highway users to give support to this protest demonstration by sounding their horn when approaching the toll plaza, when paying their toll and when leaving the toll plaza. I welcome the call by UMNO Youth Acing President, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, in Taiping yesterday calling on the government to deport all illegal immigrants from the country. I understand that the Works Minister, Datuk Samy Vellu, has returned to Malaysia ahead of the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, and I have sent him an urgent cable asking him to get the Cabinet on Wednesday, 12th August 1987, to suspend the 100% increase of highway toll rates – which is to be effected from Thursday, 13th August 1987. DAP proposes the convening of a National Conference on Chinese Education represented by political parties and Chinese organizations to draw up a 20-year plan for the defence and promotion of Chinese education in Malaysia.

In recent months, the Chinese community has been very concerned about the place and future of Chinese language, education and culture in Malaysia, which had increasingly become more intense because open contempt for the constitutional right and position of Chinese language, education and culture have become more frequent and blatant. The Immigration Department has been lax and slipshod in issuing work permits to Antah Biwater expatriate engineers, when they had not complied with all local legal requirements, like registration with the Board of Engineers. At the University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) convocation ceremony last Friday, the UKM Chancellor, the Yang di Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan, said that racial polarization in institutions of higher learning should be checked as it can affect the nation’s peace and prosperity. Dr. Lim Chong Eu has called for separate on the $10 million Batu Ferringi sewerage project tender by MPPP to be submitted by the State Secretary and State Legal Adviser to study whether to set up a Committee of Enquiry into the tender award.
