Call on MCA leadership to respect the verdict of the people of Kepayang and Raub and seek repeal of the Barisan National’s “one language” one culture’ policy to be replaced by a policy if many “many language, many cultures”

The people of Malaysia, thrpugh the electorates of Kepayang in October last year and that of Raub last Saturday on 4th June, had spoken loud and clear that they oppose and reject the Barisan National’s nation building policy of “ one language, one culture” in the 1980s announced after the April 1982 General Elections. DAP welcome Mohd. Najib’s announcement that the Raub Assessment rates will be reduced to a maximum of 15 per cent from next year.

The DAP welcome the announcement by the Pahang Mentri Besar, Datuk Mohamed Najid binTun Razak, that the Pahang Government will lower the assessment rates in the Raub district from 25 per cent to a maximum of 15 per cent from next year. I have written to the Attorney-General, Tan Sri Abu Talib bin Othman, who is also the Public Prosecutor, to take a stern view and deal severely with the incident on Wednesday, 25.5.1983, where the DAP Malacca Assemblyman for Durian Daun, Sdr. Lai Keun Ban, was surrounded by a crowd and assaulted and abused for speaking up for the people’s interest in the Malacca Assembly. Call on Elections Commission to respect the ‘one man, one vote’ principle in the redelineation of electoral constituencies and not to be swayed by UMNO influence as in the 1974 delineation

DAP calls for the immediate restoration of allocations for Pupil’s Own Language as a mark of government commitment to fully respect the constitutional right of mother-tongue learning and teaching.

DAP calls for the immediate restoration of allocations for Pupil’s Own Language as a mark of government commitment to fully respect the constitutional right of mother-tongue learning and teaching.

The Pupil’s Own Language programme in the schools is a scandal and disgrace, especially after the arbitrary and deplorable decision to cut the original allocation of $18 million for POL by $13 million, resulting in the reduction of the allowances of college-trained teachers from $20 to $5 an hour, and of graduate teachers from $25 to $8 an hour. The MCA had claimed a great breakthrough for Chinese political rights as a result of its resounding 1982 general elections results. The people had expected the MCA to deliver the goods of such political breakthrough in terms of the restoration of the lost political, economic, educational, social and cultural rights over since Merdeka in 1977. However, instead of the restoration of the lost rights, the last 12 months have seen even more remaining rights being taken away.
