DAP exposes case of one inmate at Kuala Kubu Baru Drug Rehabilitation Centre, Rajah s/o Gengathaaran, 26, who was repeatedly assaulted until he agreed to escape from the centre to get drugs of the ‘MIC’ gang at the centre

Last Wednesday, I called a press conference to tell the story of one Chow Yue Kum, 27, who absconded from the Kuala Kubu Baru Drug Rehabilitation Centre on Nov. 15 because he feared for his life when overheard that he would be sent to the ‘High Court’ that night, where an inmate would be mercilessly assaulted by the Taikos and Seniors of the three ‘illegal’ governments in the centre, self-styled as ‘MCA’ for Chinese inmates, ‘UMNO’ for Malay inmates and ‘MIC’ for Indian inmates. On 29th October 1982, a resident of Thean Teik Estate in Penang, Madam Tan Siew Lee, 33, was killed when shot in the neck by police in a scuffle between about 100 Thean Teik Estate residents and workers of the developers of Thean Teik Estate, Perumahan Farlim, who wanted to demolish the chicken coops of one of the residents. Another resident, Chuah Teow Huat, who was standing far off from the scene of the scuffle, was shot in the left hip by the police. As a result of the MCA’s ‘breakthrough’ in the April general elections, another development most adverse to the basic political, economic, educational, social and cultural rights of Malaysian Chinese had happened. Last Friday, the Acting Culture, Youth and Sports Minister, Adib Adam, declared in Parliament that the lion dance could not be accepted as part of Malaysian culture because it is not accepted by all racial groups in the country. In Parliament yesterday, I spoke to the Welfare Minister, Datin Paduka Aishah Ghani, about the case of Chow Yue Kum, 27, who escaped from the Kuala Kubu Baru Drug Rehabilitation Centre in fear of his life, and his allegations about the ‘reign of terror’ imposed by senior inmates over junior inmates, enforced by brutal physical assaults and violence. Every year, there is bad news for Malaysian students who aspire for higher education opportunities. Last month, it was announced that Australian education opportunities. Last month, it was announced that overseas students beginning next year. The quota system which so far limits entry into the medical courses in the Australian universities will be extended to cover other courses.

With a very restrictive policy governing entry into the five local universities, the unrelenting diminution of higher education places overseas at ever higher and exorbitant costs is making higher education one of the most frustrating and exasperating experiences both for the students and their parents. Shock at the ‘indifference’ shown by the Kuala Kubu Baru Drug Rehabilitation centre authorities to the ‘reign of terror’ by inmates over inmates

The Acting Principal of the Kuala Kubu Baru Drug Rehabilitation Centre, Mr. S. P. Singam, when commenting on the allegations of an inmate who escaped from the centre because of the violence and the ‘reign of terror’ by inmates who organised themselves into three ‘illegal governments’ according to race, ‘MCA’ for Chinese inmates, ‘UMNO’ for Malay inmates, and ‘MIC’ for Indian inmates, said that the centre officials were aware that ragging was practiced by the inmates. The Plight of Trawler Fishermen

Trawler fishermen, who had been encouraged by the Fisheries Department to convert from traditional methods to trawler fishing in the mid-1960s, to help increase the total fish landings in the country, are now faced with great hardships and difficulties, especially after 1980 Fisheries Regulations which require trawl nets to have mesh size of not less than 1.5 inches, as compared to the previous 1 inch mesh size.
