For a week last week, the MCA tried to dazzle the people with a display of wealth, pomp and ‘power’, with the launching of a MCA Week, the opening of the 23-storey $40 million Wisma MCA, and the grand staging of the 29th General Assemblies of the MCA Youth and MCA where the MCA tried to show that it has political ‘power’ by demanding for the appointment of a Second Deputy Prime Minister from he MCA. The Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee should stop belly aching about dissatisfied about explanations

The Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee should stop belly aching about dissatisfied about explanations by government officials, and summon Ministers to hold them responsible for giving satisfactory explanations to the Auditor-General’s comments.

Since the start of the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee hearings into the Auditor-General’s Report of the 1977 Federal Government Accounts, on 2nd Sept. 1981 the constant feature of the PAC meetings is the daily belly-aching by the PAC Chairman, Datuk Lee Boon Peng, after each day’s sitting about how unsatisfied he was about the explanations offered by government officials to various matters examined by the PAC. In a recent series of press interviews, the Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Haniff Omar, has urged members of the public to come forward in cases of abuse of power by the police, and even offered protection to members of the public who fear reprisals for reporting cases of misuse of powers by policement. DAP calls on the proceedings of the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee to be open to public and the press to ensure a more effective and responsible examination of government accounts.

There has been considerable publicity recently about the Auditor General’s Reports and the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee. This is all to the good if they contribute to greater government efficiency and accountability of management and expenditure of public funds. Gerakan national vice president, and Gerakan Selangor State Secretary, Soong Siew Hoong, said in a Gerakan function in Petaling Jaya yesterday that the target of the MCA’s attack should be the DAP and not the Gerakan.
