MCA Week and MCA General Assemblies further jeopardize the political position of the Malaysian Chinese.

For a week last week, the MCA tried to dazzle the people with a display of wealth, pomp and ‘power’, with the launching of a MCA Week, the opening of the 23-storey $40 million Wisma MCA, and the grand staging of the 29th General Assemblies of the MCA Youth and MCA where the MCA tried to show that it has political ‘power’ by demanding for the appointment of a Second Deputy Prime Minister from he MCA. The Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee should stop belly aching about dissatisfied about explanations

Speech by Parliamentary Opposition Leader, DAP Secretary- General and MP for Petaling, Lim Kit Siang, when declaring open the two-day Penang State DAP Political Course at Hotel Continental, Penang on Saturday, 19th Sept. 1981 at 2.30 p.m.

The Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee should stop belly aching about dissatisfied about explanations by government officials, and summon Ministers to hold them responsible for giving satisfactory explanations to the Auditor-General’s comments.

Since the start of the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee hearings into the Auditor-General’s Report of the 1977 Federal Government Accounts, on 2nd Sept. 1981 the constant feature of the PAC meetings is the daily belly-aching by the PAC Chairman, Datuk Lee Boon Peng, after each day’s sitting about how unsatisfied he was about the explanations offered by government officials to various matters examined by the PAC. Call on Inspector-General of Police, to direct that swift action should be taken in all complaints against abuse of power by police personnel to ensure public confidence.

In a recent series of press interviews, the Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Haniff Omar, has urged members of the public to come forward in cases of abuse of power by the police, and even offered protection to members of the public who fear reprisals for reporting cases of misuse of powers by policement. Calls for the establishment of a Constitution Review Commission in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee of the Malaysian Constitution to review how the Constitution had adhered and advanced its basic principles in the last 25 years.

I welcome the announcement by the Pepper Marketing Board Chairman, Datuk Leonard Linggi Jugah, on the board’s establishment of a $4 million scheme to buy pepper from farmers at reasonable process before exporting direct to terminal markets. Speech by Parliamentary Opposition Leader, DAP Secretary- General and MP for Petaling, Lim Kit Siang, when declaring open the two-day Perak DAP State Political Course at Perak State Hqrs at Jalan Chamberlain, Ipoh on Saturday, Sept. 12, 1981 at 2.30 p.m.

DAP calls on the proceedings of the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee to be open to public and the press to ensure a more effective and responsible examination of government accounts.

There has been considerable publicity recently about the Auditor General’s Reports and the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee. This is all to the good if they contribute to greater government efficiency and accountability of management and expenditure of public funds. MCA and Gerakan should probably try to compose their differences first before any round-table conference as there is a wide divide between the DAP on the one hand and the component Barisan parties on MCA and Gerakan on the other.

MCA and Gerakan should probably try to compose their differences first before any round-table conference as there is a wide divide between the DAP on the one hand and the component Barisan parties on MCA and Gerakan on the other.

Gerakan national vice president, and Gerakan Selangor State Secretary, Soong Siew Hoong, said in a Gerakan function in Petaling Jaya yesterday that the target of the MCA’s attack should be the DAP and not the Gerakan. I have today written to the Acting Prime Minister, Datuk Musa Hitam, expressing my grave concern at his announcement to write-off the $23 million Federal Government loan to the Ngeri Sembilan State Government over the losses of Gula N.S..
