Call on the Government to stop neglecting and ignoring the plight of the estate labours in Malaysia

The events of the past few days have further proved the government’s indifference and unconcern about the plight and suffering of the estate labourers and retrenched workers in Malaysia.

In the general review of the rubber industry, the government has no word or thought for the estate labourers, who had made great sacrifices in sweat, toil and blood to build up the rubber industry. Last Tuesday in Parliament, I asked the Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak, for the total money that has been spent by Dr. Lim Keng Yaik, in his capacity as Minister of Special Functions in charge of new villages, in the last six months in his work to uplift the socio-economic standards of living of the 900,000 new villagers in the country. This Bill provides for the establishment of the Malaysian Rubber Exchange and Licensing Board to have overall control of all activities relating to the registration, licensing, export, shipping, packing and dealing in rubber, and the co-ordination of all activities in the marketing of rubber with a view to promote the efficient marketing of rubber from Malaysia. DAP calls on government to institute comprehensive inquiry into the shockingly low quality and standard of education in Malaysian primary schools as demonstrated by the mass failures in last year’s Std. V Assessment Examination

The results of last year’s Standard V Assessment Examination for all language streams are shockingly poor. There were mass failures in all schools in the various subjects taken.

Thus, for national primary schools, on average 50% of the Malay students failed the science and mathematics subjects. For example, for Kedah, 62% of the students failed the mathematics paper and 55% failed the science paper. With the restoration of a united leadership, disciplined party and a credible political image following the party purges of June 18, 1972, the DAP has already embarked on a series of political and organisational initiatives.

The expansion of the Party in Perak, especially in the Kinta Valley, has been unusually rapid. Since May 1, the Black Day for the people of Perak for on that day the PPP entered into Alliance coalition embrace, the DAP has formed half a dozen branches in the Kinta vicinity, two of which had already been officially opened.

Selangor is being reorganised and reactivated under the leadership of Sdr. Fan Yew Teng, and in the next few months, we should see the healthy reorganisation of the DAP in Selangor. Continue reading From the SG’s Desk
