1. The Minister who is always on the run

After inaugurating the 28-member High Education Council at Parliament House yesterday, the Minister of Education, Inche Khir Johari, told the press that he would not take part in two debates which he had been challenged to. (Nanyang Siang Pao and Sin Chew Jit Poh).

The first was to a debate with Professor Syed Hussein Alatas on the Higher Education Planning Committee Report. Inche Khir, who had earlier declared that he would take part in the debate, now claim that he is too busy, and that with the formation of the Higher Education Council, the Council Chairman, Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamed, should debate with Professor Syed Hussein Alatas. Merdeka University and National University

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP public rally at Setapak Hotsprings, Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, on Monday, August 26 at 8.30 p.m.

DAP calls on government to:

(i) support Merdeka University and National University project.
(ii) develop the Technical College into a College of Technology.

On July 14, the MCA announced the proposed establishment of a $20 million MCA College.

On the very same day, the government, through the Minister of Education, Inche Khir Johari, immediately pledged the government’s support and blessing for the MCA project. The government also pledged $10 million contribution. Continue reading Merdeka University and National University

Reprieve of death penalty to the eternal credit of Malaysia

The DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today (25.8.68) issued the following statement:

The commutation of the death sentence of the 11 Johore youths to life imprisonment is to the eternal credit of the Sultan of Johore and the Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman.

DAP’s challenge to Khir Johari to a TV debate

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the general meeting of the Jinjang DAP Branch on Sunday, 25th August 1968 at 8 p.m.

A week ago, I challenged the UMNO Secretary-General, Inche Khir Johari, to a television debate with the DAP to substantiate his charge that the DAP is a “100 per cent communal party.”

Soviet aggression in Czechoslovakia

The DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today (23.8.68) issued the following statement:

All peace and freedom-loving people and nations must condemn the Soviet invasion and aggression of Czechoslovakia to impose the Soviet will on the Czechs.

Soviet action in Czechoslovakia has made a mockery of the United Nations Charter, and dealt a serious blow at efforts to establish international law and relations on the civilised basis of mutual respect of each other’s sovereignty and independence. Pudu DAP Branch table-tennis competition

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, when declaring open the Pudu Table-Tennis Competition organised by Pudu DAP Branch at the Branch premises, at 2A, Jalan Pasar Bahru, Pudu, Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, 22nd August 1968 at 8 p.m.

The Pudu DAP Branch has organised this table-tennis competition to provide healthy recreational outlets for the youngsters of Pudu.

The youths of Malaysia are facing many complex problems, including those caused by the high rate of unemployment in towns.

Penang island, Quo Vadis?

The DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today (21.8.68) issued the following statement:

Penang island is today blanketed by a fog of anxiety, gloom and pessimism, as the islanders see no way out of the economic blind alley they find themselves in, particularly with both the State and Central Governments unsympathetic and unimpressed by the urgency and seriousness of the situation.

Chakap-lah Bahasa Kebangsaan sahaja!

Speech by Editor of Rocket, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, and DAP Organising Secretary, at the second anniversary celebrations of the Rocket journal by the Penang DAP Branch at Dawood Restaurant on Monday, August 19 at 5 p.m

As I was crossing the Perak state border into Penang by car this afternoon, I saw a large hoarding board put up by the Penang State Government welcoming visitors. The hoarding board, in huge letters, carried the words “Chakap-lah Bahasa Kebangsaan sahaja!”

What struck me was the word “sahaja.” The declaration that people should speak in the National Language only clearly illustrate the “one nation, one language” policy of the Alliance Government. Continue reading Chakap-lah Bahasa Kebangsaan sahaja!

Operation Registration

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, to the Jelupang DAP Branch on Sunday, August 18, 1968 at 8 p.m.

The Democratic Action Party will launch a nation-wide campaign from September 1 to October 10 to get citizens who have not registered as voters to register themselves.

This will be the last chance to register before the next general elections. It is the basic duty of a citizen in a democratic country to exercise his vote in elections, to take part in the democratic process of deciding how this country is to be governed. Continue reading Operation Registration

The moral crisis in Malaysia

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the Second Anniversary Celebration of the Rocket Journal at the Kampar DAP Branch on Sunday, August 18, 1968 at 4.30 p.m.

For six weeks, Malaysian underwent a moral crisis as to whether to execute the 13 youths condemned for consorting with the Indonesian during Confrontation.

There were people who campaigned for the execution of the youths, the most notable of whom were the MCA Secretary-General, Mr. Kam Woon Wah, and the Political Secretary to the Minister of Finance, Mr. Bernard Lu. Continue reading The moral crisis in Malaysia
