Education Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, said yesterday that he could not understand why the Chinese community insist on maintaining Boards of Management of ‘fully-aided’ Chinese primary schools when they are ‘empty and hollow’, as they do not have any real administrative powers, such as appointment of teachers. DAP condemns MCA and Gerakan Ministers for failing Chinese language, education and the Chinese community in not bringing up the issue in Cabinet although it had met five times since its beginning.

The promotion of teachers unversed in Mandarin to senior positions in Chinese primary schools in Malacca, Penang, Kuala Lumpur and other states since the beginning of September must be taken as the most serious threat to the character and survival of Chinese primary schools since the 3M incident in 1981. The Immigration Department has been lax and slipshod in issuing work permits to Antah Biwater expatriate engineers, when they had not complied with all local legal requirements, like registration with the Board of Engineers. The MCA leaders, branches and members not to bring greater dishonour to the Malaysian Chinese community and nation by their demonstrations and wild statements in connection with the arrest of MCA President, Tan Koon Swan, 45, and being charged in Singapore for six counts of criminal breach of trust over the Pan El crisis.

If the MCA leaders, branches and members could not make distinction between charges involving corporate crimes, leading to a crisis which resulted in the three-day suspension of the Kuala Lumpur and Singapore stook exchanges and billions of dollars of shares losses by the invertors, and politics, then it is a sad reflection on the calibre, quality and standard of the new MCA.
