Lim Kit Siang accepts debate challenge by Dr. Naguib Alatas of Gerakan

The DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today (5.11.1968) issued the following statement:

I accept the challenge by the Gerakan leader, Dr. Syed Naguib Alatas, to a debate on the Gerakan’s cultural policy as expounded by him publicly before.

Dr. Alatas statement was a shocking diatribe of cheap and vulgar abuse. I do not propose to descend so low however to trade abuse and name-calling with the learned academician. Continue reading Lim Kit Siang accepts debate challenge by Dr. Naguib Alatas of Gerakan

Operation ‘Voters Check’

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, to the Sentul DAP Branch on Wednesday, October 30, 1968 at 8 p.m.

The DAP Headquarters has instructed all its branches in the country to carry out a house-to-house campaign in their respective areas to check that voters who had voted in the 1959 and 1964 general elections are still on the electoral register.

We found that in the recent Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election, at one polling centre alone, there were several hundred voters who have lost their right to vote because their names had been struck off from the electoral register, although they had voted in previous elections and had not moved to new addresses. The Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election: A Review and Appraisal

Talk by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, to the Klang DAP Branch on Saturday, October 26, 1968 at 8 p.m.

The Democratic Action Party did creditably well in the Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election. Although we did not win, we have given the Alliance a shock in their Segamat stronghold, and laid a strong basis for victory in the next general elections.

Before the Nomination Day, we had no local organisation in Segamat, as our branch had not been officially set up, and we had only a few members in Segamat. Continue reading The Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election: A Review and Appraisal

Polling day for Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the final DAP Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election rally at Gemas Bahru on Friday, October 18, 1968 at 8 p.m.

Tomorrow is polling day for Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election. We urge the voters of Segamat Utara to come out and vote for the Rocket and the DAP Candidate, Lee Ah Meng, and reject the Alliance, both for the Alliance record in Segamat and the nation.

The late Alliance Member of Parliament for Segamat Utara never said a single word in Parliament in the last ten years, either to voice the hardships and problems of the people, like the development tax and the 10-cents telephone levy, nor did he take part in any of the parliamentary debates about the future of the country. The Alliance government is an inefficient, incompetent and corrupt government

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the DAP Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election rally at Batu Anam on Wednesday, October 16, 1968 at 8 p.m.

During the recent Johore Bahru Town Council Commission of Inquiry hearings, the people learn of the shocking way in which the Alliance ran the affairs of Johore Bahru.

The Alliance-controlled council paid $85,000 for a wall which costs $1,500. There were $80,429 of expenditure which had no receipts. Continue reading The Alliance government is an inefficient, incompetent and corrupt government

The Alliance claims that it practices democracy. But is this claim borne out by practice?

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the DAP Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election, at Buloh Kasap, Segamat, on October 15, 1968 at 8 p.m.

In the Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election, the Alliance can have three rallies in one night. But when the DAP applies for having two rallies in one night, this is refused on the ground that the police does not have enough tape-recorders. The real reasons for the formation of the direct Alliance membership system

The DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today (3.10.68) issued the following statement:

In the Straits Times today, the Alliance executive secretary, Mr. Robert Goh said the Alliance hopes to dissolve its component communal parties, UMNO, MCA and MIC, to form a non-communal political party in a decade or two.

He further claimed that the introduction of the direct membership system by the Alliance two years ago had been an effort towards this goal. Continue reading The real reasons for the formation of the direct Alliance membership system

Ten questions for Alliance candidate, Inche Musa Hitam

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the second DAP Segamat Utara by-election public rally at Jementah, Segamat, on Friday, 27th September 1968 at 8 p.m.

Tonight, I wish to ask the Alliance candidate for Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election, Inche Musa Hitam, ten questions.

If he has nothing to hide, I am sure Inche Hitam would answer these question and welcome an opportunity for the voters of Segamat Utara to have a clearer idea of his thinking and beliefs, and help them to decide whether he or the DAP Candidate, Mr. Lee Ah Meng, a veteran trade unionist who had devoted the last ten years to the service of his fellow workers, should represent them in Parliament. A historic choice before the voters of Segamat Utara

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the first DAP Segamat Utara by-election rally held at the Segamat town padang on Wednesday, 25th September 1968 at 8 p.m.

The Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election is important not only to Segamat, but to the entire nation.

If the Segamat voters solidly vote for the DAP and reject the Alliance, they will give a fillip to the rising national reaction against the failures and follies of 13 years of Alliance rule, and ensure that in the next general elections, a strong team of Opposition Parliamentarians will be elected to check the financial excesses and abuse of power of the Alliance government. The moral of the Syed Nasir affair

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, to the Sentral DAP Branch on Wednesday, September 18, 1968 at 8 p.m.

The moral of the Syed Nasir affair

On March 15, 1967, the Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman told a post-Cabinet news conference that the Public Services Commission would be taking action against the Director of the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Syed Nasir bin Ismail, for his stand on the National Language Bill in opposing the government.
