One Language, One Culture

On behalf of the DAP, I rise to thank His Majesty for His Royal Address yesterday in conjunction with the official opening of the First Session of the Sixth Parliament, setting out the Government’s policy statement of the year.

DAP apology to the voters of Kepayang for a by-election five months after the General Elections

The Elections Commission has announced that Nomination Day for Kepayang by-election would be on Sept. 30 and polling on Oct. 16. First of all, the DAP wishes to apologise to the voters of Kepayang for the holding of a by-election five months after the April General Elections. The Party cannot justify Sdr. I had announced at a Malacca press conference on Monday that the DAP would conduct a thorough investigation into the Hu Sepang-Chia Ban Chun affair, where the Seramban Nanyang Siang Pao reporter alleged that DAP Assemblyman for Rahang had gone to the press office and rummaged his drawers and threatened him. I have just returned from Sarawak where the recently concluded Sarawak and Sabah general elections have elected DAP MPs for Kuching, Sibu and Sandakan, bringing the total Parliamentary strength to nine. This was also the DAP’s parliamentary result in the 1974 general elections, when the late Tun Razak capitalized on a pro-government swing and used the Mao Tse Tung strategy to try to crush the Opposition, in particular the DAP. Lim Kit Siang rebuts Dr. Mahathir and wants Prime Minister to explain what is wrong in the DAP asking the people opposed to the implementation of 3M in Chinese and Tamil primary schools to express themselves in the general election.

In his speech when opening the 3-day UMNO information course in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, the Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir, charged that an opposition party had turned the 3M issue into a racial issue and that another party had fallen into its traps. He also criticised opposition parties for creating doubts among the people by turning non-issues to issues for their own political gain. The DAP welcomes the reminder by the Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamed that State Exco members decide whether they want to give up their business ventures or continue to hold office. However, the time for reminders is well over and what the people want to see is action and result and the ability of the new political leadership to match deeds with words.
