Last week, I formally submitted a written application to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, Datuk Musa Hitam, for permission for a DAP Parliamentary and State Assembly delegation to make a two—week visit to China in December 1985/January 1986. The report that at least 200 original files and documents held by the Registry of Business have been missing or ‘misplaced’ over a year, causing hardship and inconvenience to businessmen and the public, is most shocking. Recently, the Barisan Nasional government announced the lifting of restriction on travel by Malaysians to China, and by the way this government announcement was publicized, it would appear to be a major breakthrough in the full normalization of relations between Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China. Although Malaysia and China established diplomatic relations ten years ago, Malaysian government leaders and strategists are still guided by the doctrine that it is China, and not Soviet Union, which is more of a military threat in South East Asia.
