Throughout the country hospital, the government faces an acute shortage of doctor and in particular, specialists. Every year, Malaysia has to recruit doctors from Indonesia, India and Bangladesh, countries which need doctors even more than Malaysia, to help fill some of the vacancies in Malaysia hospitals. Call on Malaysian Government to immediately grant provisional registration to some 50 Malaysian graduates from medical colleges in India and Taiwan so that they can work as housemen in Malaysian hospitals

There are now some 50 Malaysian graduates of Indian and Taiwan medical colleges who have been denied provisional registration and cannot begin their housemanship. The Ministry of Health claims that they come from Unscheduled Medical Colleges, and have therefore to sit for Qualifying Examination for Doctors set by the Ministry of Health, before they are permitted provisional registration to enable to do their housemanship. Last weekend, together with the DAP MP for Ipoh, Sdr Lim Cho Hock and the DAP State Assemblymen for Gopeng, Sdr P.Patto, I visited the Ipoh General Hospital to see a 17-year old boy from Jalong New Village, Sungei Siput, Leong Choon Hwa, who was injured and hospitalised on 13.8.1977.

Call to University authorities and Government to maintain high medical standard and ensure that doctors produced locally are recognised internationally.

It was reported in the local press two days ago that the Dean of the Medical Faculty of the Universiti Kebangsaan, Datuk Paduka Prof. (Dr.) Abdul Wahad Ariff, had disclosed that his Medical Faculty was trying to get the Medical Council of the United Kingdom to recognize its degrees.
