It is most shocking that the Peneng Chief Minister Dr Koh Tsu Koon , has rushed into announcing the re-appointment of Datuk Tan Gim Hwa as MPPP President , although his two –year contract will not expire until next month. Gim Hwa should explain whether the effect of placing Hotel Metropole on Category 2 of conservation buildings means that Hotel Metropole could be demolished so long as the facade is preserved

The disclosure on Wednesday by MPPP councilor, Dr. Goh Ban Lee that the MPPP on October 28 , 1994 had reclassified the heritage buildings along Jalan Sultan HAmad Shah into category Penang Public knew about the decision. MPPP president , Datuk Tan Gim Hwa , said yeaterday that there is no law to prevent anyone from demolishing a heritage to take action under the Town and Country Planning Act 1976 for demolishing without planning approval and serving a notice for the rebuilding of the demolished building.
