Lim Kit Siang calls for full public inquiry into the police shoot-out in the heart of Ipoh town on August 13, and asks for a meeting with Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Haniff Omar

Last weekend, when I was in Ipoh, I found the general Ipoh public very agitated and angry about the indiscriminate police public shooting in the heart of Ipoh town on August 13 of police escapees causing three deaths and one serious injury.

Wherever I went in Ipoh, the members of the public came up to me to register their revulsion and strong reaction against the police handling of the incident – although the incident took place two weeks previously. Malaysian conscience shocked by mandatory death sentence on 14 years old on firearms charge

Ketua Pembangkang and DAP Secretary-General, Lim Kit Siang, on 26.8.1977:

Malaysian conscience shocked by mandatory death sentence on 14 years old on firearms charge.

The Malaysian conscience was shocked this morning when Malaysians woke up this morning to read from their newspaper about the death sentence passed a 14-year-old boy by the Penang High Court for guilty of having a pistol and ammunition.

I do not want to go into the merits or demerits of the case. It however highlights of a law which makes it mandatory for a death sentence to be passed even on a 14- year- old boy regardless of the surrounding circumstances of the possession of firearms. Chian Heng Kai and Chan Kok Kit: Detention under ISA

This is the 20th anniversary of Malaysia since Independence in 1957, but the basic issues of nation building remain unresolved.

The big question, what type of Malaysian nation we are building, has not been answered with satisfaction, assurance or certainty.

There are significant numbers of those who refuse to accept the reality and fact that Malaysia is a multi-racial, multi-lingual and multi-religious nation, and that any other basis of nation building can only bring division, disintegration and disaster. Political Trends – Problems and Prospects

At the close of our second decade of nationhood, Malaysia is beset with as many complex problems and challenges coming from as many directions that it would be quite foolhardy for anyone to attempt to forecast that Malaysia would be like on the third decade of Independence in 1987, let alone what Malaysia would like be in the year 2001. Essential (Security Cases) Regulations – a step towards an authoritarian police state

I move that this House repeals the Essential (Security Cases) Regulations 1975 and the Essential ( Security Cases) (Amendment) Regulations 1975.

On Oct. 4, the Government gazetted the Essential (Security Cases) Regulations 1975 under Section 2 of the Emergency (Essential Power) Ordinance No.1 of 1969.

These Regulations immediately attracted national and international censure for their blatant disregard of human fights and the overturning of basic principles of law in stripping away all the essential safeguards for a fair trial in a new breed of cases classified as “security cases”.
