DAP to challenge in court the legality of the government’s interpretation of the Dangerous Drug (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985 that the Minister had no authority to overrule Advisory Board’s decision on extension of detention.

The Deputy Home Affairs Minister, Radzi Sheikh Ahmad, said yesterday that the Home Affairs Minister has no authority to overrule the Advisory Board’s decision to continue detaining 12 men at the Muar rehabilitation centre, which shows that the Home Affairs Minister and the government had misconstructed the provisions of the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985. DAP calls for stringent laws to resolve the problem of the million illegal immigrants in Malaysia by making it a custodial offence for anyone who organises, assists, harbours, employs or aids illegal immigrants.

In May last year, when the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Musa Hitam, went to Medan to sign the Malaysia-Indonesia Supply of Workers Agreement to regulate the flow of Indonesian workers into Malaysia, Datuk Musa explained that the agreement was intended to head off growing local resentment of rush of immigrant Indonesians who entered Malaysia illegally. Task Force III for illegal Indonesian immigrants

Yesterday, I attended a public protest meeting held by the people of Tongkang Pechah, Batu Pahat, at the Balai Rakyat to protest against the criminal activities of illegal Indonesian immigrants, which have become a menace to law and order, as well as to human life and safety of property.

On 19th October 1984, a rubber tapper, Lim Ah Tee, 42, was killed by two illegal Indonesian immigrants at an oil palm plantation at Kampong Bukit Belah, Tongkang Pechah, leaving behind a wife, a four-year-old and a four-month baby girl and a 84-year-old mother. On behalf of the DAP, I rise to thank His Majesty for His Royal Address yesterday in conjunction with the official opening of the First Session of the Sixth Parliament, setting out the Government’s policy statement of the year.
