DAP calls on Tun Razak to intervene and settle the interpreter’s claims to allow them to get a just deal

DAP calls on Tun Razak to intervene and settle the interpreter’s claims to allow them to get a just deal

The DAP calls on the Prime minister, Tun Razak, to intervene in the court interpreters’ strike and accede to the interpreters’ claim for pay scale revisions, which had not been adjusted for 23 years, to prove that all workers can get a just and fair deal in Malaysia.

The DAP supports all efforts by workers to fight for a better deal. It is useless to have increasing GNP or to have one of the highest living standards in Asia, if our workers are lowly paid. This great contrast can only mean that the fruits of economic development have not been distributed equally and fairly among all sections of Malaysians, but are being monpolised by the Malaysian rich.

Minimum Wage Law for Workers

Since the resumption of Parliaments in February 1971 till now, one of the constant subjects my colleagues and I in the DAP have kept pressing for inside this Chamber is for the enactment of legislation to fix basic minimum wages for workers, to ensure that they and their dependents enjoy the basic human needs of food, clothing, housing and schooling.

Unfortunately, this proposal, to my knowledge, had never received the serious consideration of the government, probably for the simple reason that there is not a single Cabinet Minister who had a labour past, and who understands and sympathises with the sufferings, aspirations and hopes of the working class. The Democratic Action Party joins the workers in Malaysia to rededicate themselves to the cause of labour, of raising the status of the working class in Malaysia and enhancing the dignity of their role in building the nation, on the occasion of this year’s May Day.

The workers in Malaysia have been a very downtrodden class of people in a Malaysia where the capital ists and the moneyed interests are given preference and priority in all governmental departments. Continue reading May Day Message by DAP Secretary-General, Lim Kit Siang

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the general meeting of the Malacca Division of the DAP Youth Movement on Saturday, 23rd February 1974 at 10 a.m.

1. Call on Datuk Hussein Onn, to take action against profiteering by importers who make 100 per cent profits.

Early this week, the Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Hussein Onn, announced that the government was to take “immediate and urgent measures” to check hoarding and profiteering

This is not the first time that he government has announced steps to fight profiteering and hoarding but up to date, all government measures to fight profiteering and check price increases have failed. Whether the present government measures against hoarding and profiteering will also fail, only time will tell. DAP calls on Minister of Labour, Tan Sri Manickavasagam

DAP calls on Minister of Labour, Tan Sri Manickavasagam, to personally intervene to settle the 17-day Thung Pao strike and the 26-day Ong Yoke Lin strike to protect the legitimate interests and rights of workers

I have today written to the Minister of Labour, Tan Sri V. Manickavasagam, asking him to personally intervene in the 17-day Thung Pao strike and the 26-day Sharikat Ong Yoke Lin strike to reach a settlement which will uphold legitimate rights and interests of the workers.

Yesterday, accompanied by the Chairman of DAP Labour Bureau, Sdr. Lee Lam Thye, who is also Selangor State Assemblyman, and DAP CEC Member, Sdr. Chain Heng Kai, I visited the Sharikat Ong Yoke Lin strikes. It is clear that this is another case of anti-union management which do not want to see workers organised into a union to more effective represent workers’ interests.
