DAP calls on Government to freeze the new cement price increase for one month and to hold public inquiry for the Ministry of Trade and the cement manufacturers to justify the huge cement price increase which would have the immediate impact on introducing a $100 million inflationary increase in country.

The 60% increase in the price of cement throughout Peninsular Malaysia approved by the Ministry of Trade and Industry would cost the people over $100 million in added burden and inflation, without taking into account the chain effects of price increase in houses, rentals and other services. DAP calls on the Government to abolish surtax on motor spare parts, tyres and other accessories and the slash the import duties on diesel to prevent increase of bus and taxi fares and other transport charges to forestall another inflationary spiral

With the recent government approval for another eight cents a gallon increase for diesel, taxi operators, bus companies and other transport firms are pressing for an increase of fares and transport charges.

This will not only add to the very heavy burden of the poor, but will in turn spark off another chain action of price increases. Ministry of Primary Industries has assured that oil and diesel prices would not go up in the next three months

DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang today issued the following statement

In a local press (Nanyang Siang Pau) it was reported that the Ministry of Primary Industries has assured that oil and diesel prices would not go up in the next three months.

This is a most unsatisfactory assurance, for it not only does not solve the present diesel shortage crisis in the country, but clearly indicate that Malaysians would most likely have to suffer a third oil price increase within a period of one year following the first oil price increased in December last year. On 9th May, 1974, when the Minister of Primary Industries, Datuk Haji Talib Mahmud, called a press conference to announce government approval for oil price increases, he said that the government would only permit the increase of five cents for kerosene, from 71 cents a gallon to 76 cents a gallon.
