Just before Christmas last year, the Alliance government gave in to the pressure of the five international oil companies in Malaysia, Shell, Esso, Caltex, Mobil, and British-Petroluem, and allowed big increases in the prices of petrol, diesel, and fuel oil. DAP calls on Tun Razak to dissolve Parliament and hold fresh general elections on the expiry of the five-year mandate in May 1974

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the Perak DAP State Convention held at Jubilee Park Hall, Jalan Brewster, Ipoh, on Sunday, 10th February, 1974 at 10.00 a.m.

1. DAP calls on Tun Razak to dissolve Parliament and hold fresh general elections on the expiry of the five-year mandate in May 1974.

The present government was elected on May 10, 1969 with a mandate to rule the country for a period of five years.

This mandate will expire in three months’ time. The DAP calls on Tun Razak ,to dissolve Parliament and hold fresh general elections so that the Alliance government would not exceed the five-year mandate it has received from the people.

On the 21st January 1974, the Alliance Government introduced and passed in the Dewan Rakyat the Price Control (Amendment) Bill to arm the government with more powers to fight inflation and price increases. Call for lifting of import duties on Mandarin oranges to enable poor and low-income Malaysian Chinese to celebrate Chinese New Year

The MCA is holding a special conference for all its branch officials in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow to discuss the issues and problems facing the people of Malaysia, in particular the Malaysian Chinese.

What is needed is not more discussion, but resolution and action to help the ordinary people in the country to lead a better and more fulfilling life.

There are so many things which should be done immediately, and which can be done immediately, both by MCA Ministers and other Alliance Ministers. The only question is whether these Ministers have the will, ability and determination to do what is right by the people.

Reconsider and withdraw approval for price increases for petrol, diesel and fuel oil

Ketua Pembangkang and DAP Secretary-General, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today issued the following statements (22.12.1973):

Call on the Government to reconsider and withdraw its approval for price increases for petrol, diesel and fuel oil by corresponding reduction of government duty

The government approval of price increases for petrol, diesel and fuel oil will fan further the flames of inflation. Premium grade petrol goes up 34 cents a gallon, regular petrol 24 cents a gallon; gas oil and diesel 11 cents a gallon and fuel oil, 5 cents a gallon.

These are pretty hefty increases, and will lead to increases in transport costs for goods and persons, whether motorists or non-motorists.

This will also be another excuse for another round of increase of prices of locally manufactured goods.

The assurance that has been given by the Primary Industries Minister, Datuk Taib Mahmud, that the increases should not contribute to higher prices for manufactured products and that the government would deal severely with any attempt of profiteering will as usual be meaningless and without effect, just like all other government assurance inside and outside Parliament these past years. DAP calls for a government freeze on all price increases

Today, it is widely reported that the price of condensed milk is expected to go up shortly by about five cents a tin. Only last October, the price of condensed milk went up by five cents a tin.

DAP condemns five cents increase in sugar price

The DAP condemns the government’s approval of five cents increase in the price of sugar, which has further increased the hardships of the much-suffering kampong people, the farmers, estate labourers, new villagers, town workers.

We particularly deplore Tun Tan Siew Sin’s approval of the sugar price increase, after my colleagues and I in the DAP had warned the government not to give in to the demand of the sugar manufacturers to increase the price of sugar. Continue reading DAP condemns five cents increase in sugar price
