The Opposition Front will abolish the Cheras and Jalan Pahang tolls if it is given the mandate to govern Malaysia in the next general elections

The Cheras tolls issue had been mishandled by the Barisan Nasional Government right from the beginning, and for this reason, the frustration, opposition and anger of the Cheras residents against the Cheras toll is understandable. The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Rahim Noor, has made contradictory statements about me yesterday. According to the Star, Tan Sri Rahim Noor told me and other political leaders to “stay out of the Cheras toll issue”. Today, the DAP launches a mass signature campaign in the Klang Valley to protest and oppose the proposed collection of toll on the 23-year old Federal Highway from Subang to Klang (Federal Highway Route II) after it has been widened from four to six lanes by United Engineers Malaysia (EUM). As a result of the DAP’s vigorous protests against the proposed toll increases at the North-South Highway by 100%, the Works Minister, Datuk Samy Vellu, at the opening of the Senawang-Ayer Keroh Highway on 13th August 1987, announced a month-long postponement of the increase until Sept 15.
