1. The Minister who is always on the run

After inaugurating the 28-member High Education Council at Parliament House yesterday, the Minister of Education, Inche Khir Johari, told the press that he would not take part in two debates which he had been challenged to. (Nanyang Siang Pao and Sin Chew Jit Poh).

The first was to a debate with Professor Syed Hussein Alatas on the Higher Education Planning Committee Report. Inche Khir, who had earlier declared that he would take part in the debate, now claim that he is too busy, and that with the formation of the Higher Education Council, the Council Chairman, Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamed, should debate with Professor Syed Hussein Alatas. Reprieve of death penalty to the eternal credit of Malaysia

The DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today (25.8.68) issued the following statement:

The commutation of the death sentence of the 11 Johore youths to life imprisonment is to the eternal credit of the Sultan of Johore and the Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman.

Pudu DAP Branch table-tennis competition

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, when declaring open the Pudu Table-Tennis Competition organised by Pudu DAP Branch at the Branch premises, at 2A, Jalan Pasar Bahru, Pudu, Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, 22nd August 1968 at 8 p.m.

The Pudu DAP Branch has organised this table-tennis competition to provide healthy recreational outlets for the youngsters of Pudu.

The youths of Malaysia are facing many complex problems, including those caused by the high rate of unemployment in towns.

Social unrest and indiscipline have worsened over the years. Between 1964 and 1967, the number of juvenile delinquency cases have doubled, from 208 cases to 400 cases. Continue reading Pudu DAP Branch table-tennis competition

The moral crisis in Malaysia

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the Second Anniversary Celebration of the Rocket Journal at the Kampar DAP Branch on Sunday, August 18, 1968 at 4.30 p.m.

For six weeks, Malaysian underwent a moral crisis as to whether to execute the 13 youths condemned for consorting with the Indonesian during Confrontation.

There were people who campaigned for the execution of the youths, the most notable of whom were the MCA Secretary-General, Mr. Kam Woon Wah, and the Political Secretary to the Minister of Finance, Mr. Bernard Lu. Continue reading The moral crisis in Malaysia

Motion to reprieve the death sentence of the 13 condemned

Talk by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, to members and supporters at Pusing, Perak, on Saturday, August 17, 1968 at 7.30 p.m

Appeal to Tunku to withdraw the whip to allow Alliance MPs to vote according to conscience on the motion to reprieve the death sentence of the 13 condemned.

When the motion seeking a reprieve of the death sentence of the 13 condemned youths is put to a vote in Parliament next week, we urge the Prime Minister to allow MPs to vote according to individual conscience, and not in conformity with any party line.

DAP supports National University idea

The DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today (16.8.68) issued the following statement:

The Democratic Action Party fully supports the proposal to establish a National University, to provide opportunities for higher education for National secondary schools.

The national school system is the step-child of the government. Its standard is low, teaching poor, and its certificate, the S.P.M., worthless.

This is why there is an exodus of students from national schools to national-type English schools. This is why although Alliance Ministers, including the Education Minister, Inche Khir Johari, warned parents not to send their children away from national schools to English schools, none of their children is studying in any of the national schools. DAP hails stay of execution of the 11 condemned

The DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today (16.8.68) issued the following statement:

The people of all races in Malaysia, and of all nationalities throughout the world, sighed with relief on the announcement by the Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, declaring a stay of execution of the 11 condemned youths.

Malaysia, which has been standing trial at the bar of world opinion for six weeks as to whether we are a nation of mercy, compassion, and humanity, or whether we are an unfeeling, callous and heartless people, has gone some way to redeem her name and image in the world. Malaysian conscience on trial at the bar of world opinion

Malaysia is now standing trial at the bar of world opinion, as to whether we are a nation of mercy, compassion and humanity, or whether we are an unfeeling, callous and heartless people.

The liberal conscience throughout the world have been agitated by the Malaysian government’s grim and unswerving determination to hang the 13 youths. Never before have the world attention been so focussed on Malaysia, to find out whether Malaysia has a soul and a conscience. The Role of Youth Organisations in Malaysia

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary and Editor of the Rocket, Mr Lim Kit Siang, at a forum on “The Role of Youth Organisations in Malaysia” organised by the Klang Organising Committee for the National Youth Week Celebrations at the Letchumanan Hall, Klang on Wednesday, 31st July 1968 at 7.30 p.m.

Malaysia is a nation of youths. Sixty per cent of our population of close to 10 million people are under 25 years of age.

As such, what the Malaysian youth movement does or does not do is of vital importance to our country, because the majority of our people – as represented by the youths – are in the process of shaping their outlook, aims and purpose in life.
