DAP to prepare to go it alone in the next general elections in view of repeated rejection by the other opposition parties for bilateral talks

Last Sunday, at the meeting of DAP Negeri Sembilan State Committee meeting in Seremban, I reiterated the DAP’s invitation to the other parties to hold bilateral discussions with regard to the question of having an electoral understanding in the next general elections. Call to University authorities and Government to maintain high medical standard and ensure that doctors produced locally are recognised internationally.

It was reported in the local press two days ago that the Dean of the Medical Faculty of the Universiti Kebangsaan, Datuk Paduka Prof. (Dr.) Abdul Wahad Ariff, had disclosed that his Medical Faculty was trying to get the Medical Council of the United Kingdom to recognize its degrees. I call on the Minister of Labour, Dato Lee San Choon, to take disciplinary action against an Industrial Relations Officer in his Ministry who openly sided with the management in a dispute involving over 400 workers in Malaysia Fancy Plywood Veneer & Co. Ltd. at 5th mile, Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur. DAP wants legislation to prohibit Industrial Relations Officers and Commissioners of Labour from taking up appointments as Management Personnel Officers for the first five years after leaving government service

Speech by Ketua Pembangkang and DAP Secretary- General, Lim Kit Siang, when speaking at the formation of the Perak DAP Labour Bureau in Ipoh on Saturday, 27th August 1977.

DAP wants legislation to prohibit Industrial Relations Officers and Commissioners of Labour from taking up appointments as Management Personnel Officers for the first five years after leaving government service.

The formation of the DAP Labour Bureau marks another step in the DAP fundamental commitment to the cause of Labour.

The task of the DAP Labour Bureau is to continue to identify labour problems, highlight the grievances of the workers and to champion the cause of the toiling masses. Malaysian conscience shocked by mandatory death sentence on 14 years old on firearms charge.

The Malaysian conscience was shocked this morning when Malaysians woke up this morning to read from their newspaper about the death sentence passed a 14-year-old boy by the Penang High Court for guilty of having a pistol and ammunition.

I do not want to go into the merits or demerits of the case. It however highlights of a law which makes it mandatory for a death sentence to be passed even on a 14- year- old boy regardless of the surrounding circumstances of the possession of firearms. DAP calls on ASEAN governments to change their laws to respect and promote human rights in the region.

Speech by Ketua Pembangkang and DAP Secretary-General, Lim Kit Siang, at the inaugural meeting of the DAP Federal Territory/ Selangor Elections Preparations Committee meeting in K.L.DAP office on Thursday, 25th August 1977 at 7.30 p.m.

DAP calls on ASEAN governments to change their laws to respect and promote human rights in the region.

The time has come for the DAP at state and branch levels to prepare more systematically for the next general elections, which is not too far away.

The task of the Federal Territory/ Selangor Elections Preparations Committee will be to propose targets for the next general elections, and to execute plans at both the state and branch levels to reach these election targets. DAP seriously concerned by the victimisation of CUEPACS Vice President

The DAP is seriously concerned by the victimisation of CUEPACS Vice President, Mr. S.Santhanasamy, for organising and taking part in the picketing at the Public Services Department about two weeks ago.

Mr. Santhanasamy, who is also general secretary of the National Union of PWD Employees, had been transferred from the JKR HD library to the workshop at Jalan Cheras, to restrict hid capacity to discharge his duties as a union leader. IMF’s official complaint against the Malaysian Government to ILO: DAP calls on Labour Minister Lee San Choo to stop splitting the workers movement into peanut unions and to respect the right and freedom of workers to organize and join unions

There are many reasons to explain why the Malaysian labour movement is not the national force it should be to spearhead economic, political and social changes to rectify the inequitable distribution of wealth and incomes in the country. The first issue of the English Rocket journal for 1977 will appear by the latest in the first week of September. After that, we English Rocket will appear monthly on time. Sdr. P. Pattoo will be responsible to see that this is done.

Rockets in other languages cannot yet be published as the Home Affairs Ministry permit for them have not been issued.

The planning and production of Rocket journals and other publicity and political materials is only the first half of the challenge of making a breakthrough to communicate with the people of Malaysia. The other half is that of dissemination, to ensure that every copy of publication issued by the Headquaters is given out to the rakyat to read. At this juncture, it will be an inexcusable waste of effort and resources if party liaterature are allowed to gather dust. Continue reading From the SG’s Desk
