Challenge to the MCA

Talk by DAP Organising Secretary Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a public meeting at the Balai Ra’ayat at Kampong Coldstream organised by the Tapah DAP Branch on Saturday, 29th June 1968 at 8 p.m.

For the first time in the history of our country, there is a national political movement which stands for cultural democracy for the people of Malaysia. This is the Democratic Action Party.

By cultural democracy, we mean the full and free flowering and growth of all cultures and languages in Malaysia. We believe Malaysian culture should come about through the free and equal interaction and interchange of the various cultural streams in the country, and not through the imposition of one culture over the others. The Bangkok Talks – Philippines’ claim to Sabah

Talk by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr Lim Kit Siang, to the Slim River DAP Branch on Saturday, June 29 at 5 p.m.

The current Bangkok talks on the Philippines claim to Sabah has become an international farce and scandal. It shows up the insincerity of the Philippines Government in really working towards harmonious relations and goodwill among South East Asian nations.

The fine sentiments expressed by President Marcos of the Philippines when he visited Malaysia only five months ago have turned to ashes. Continue reading The Bangkok Talks – Philippines’ claim to Sabah

“Do as I say but don’t do as I do”

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kim Siang, at the Pudu DAP branch on Monday, June 17 at 8 p.m. Pudu DAP Branch is the latest branch in Selangor to be registered. It is the 15th branch in the Selangor.

The Minister of Education, Inche Khir bin Johari, has called on teacher’s union to draw up a code of ethics as soon as possible.

He claimed that there are many “unethical practices” among teachers.

Inche Khir bin Johari is deliberately vague about his charges of “unethical practices.”

Unless these “unethical practices” are spelt out publicly, Inche Khir bin Johari’s charge can only be regarded as his latest in a long series of attempts to demoralise and undermine public confidence in the teachers. This can benefit no one, apart from, Inche Khir bin Johari. Continue reading “Do as I say but don’t do as I do”

All-party financial watchdog committee

Talk by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr Lim Kit Siang, to members of the Ipoh DAP Branch on Sunday, June 16 at 10 a.m.

A fortnight ago, the Minister of Finance, Tun Tan Siew Sin, warned Malaysians to concentrate on essentials and to be “more utilitarian” as “cash is running out with the time” in Malaysia.

The person who should take most heed of this warning is none other Tun Tan Siew Sin himself. For cash ran out during Tun Tan Siew Sin’s tenure as Minister of Finance. As a result, Tun Tan introduced Malaysia into the era of deficit financing, piling up loans – a policy which mortgaged the future generations to pay for the present.

Malaysia would not today face her most serious financial crisis if Alliance leaders had the foresight and intelligence to cut out all wasteful projects ever since they came into office after Independence. Continue reading All-party financial watchdog committee

Thousands of Malaysians holding Nanyang University qualifications are still unemployed and underpaid, because the Malaysian Government has persistently refused to work out a formula to accord recognition to Nantah degrees.

Great trials and tribulations for Malaysian workers

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr Lim Kit Siang, when inaugurating the DAP Johore Labour Bureau in Johore Bahru on Saturday, 8th June 1968 at 5 pm.

The workers of Malaysia are entering a period of great trials and tribulations. They are facing their greatest challenge and onslaught from the management in the last two decades.

There are already many ominous signs. For the past month, there had been growing and spreading labour unrest in the estates.

Between six to eight thousand rubber tappers and workers had been retrenched. Major strikes are increasing all over the country. In Johore, 1,700 tappers and workers in the Johore Labis Estate in Cha’ah had been on strike for a month. All the indications are that industrial unrest are going to increase and even spread to other sectors of the economy, rather than decrease and subside. DAP will contest in Sitiawan in the next GE

Press Release

The Democratic Action Party will contest in Sitiawan in the next general elections  the DAP Organising Secretary, Mr Lim Kit Siang, said last night.

Mr. Lim, who was speaking at a DAP meeting at Pekan Gurney, urged DAP members and supporters to work hard to return a DAP Member of Parliament for Sitiawan in the next Parliament.

Over 400 villagers from the surrounding areas attended the meeting.

Mr Lim said he was confident that the people of Sitiwan, like Malaysians in other constituencies, are utterly fed up with the yes-men in the Parliament and the State Assemblies.

He said: “The people want true representatives of the ordinary men and women, who can fearlessly speak up for the people’s rights and interests, and put public service before self-interests.

“The people of Sitiawan can join large numbers of Malaysians elsewhere to bring about change and progress in Malaysia by sweeping out Alliance and the MCA politicians in the next elections, and bring into Parliament a band of sincere, dedicated and honest politicians with a mission to bring justice and equality to the nation.”

Mr. Lim criticized the Alliance government for neglecting the problems of the people.

He said: “The disastrous drop in the price of rubber for over a year has broken the rice bowls of thousands of tappers, workers and farmers.

“One way to help them will be to give them land to cultivate other crops. All Malaysian landless, regardless of their race, should be given a plot of land to eke out a living, as there are still vast stretches of virgin land in Malaysia.

“But the Alliance is not only failing to do this, it is in fact going out of its way to cause more misery and hardships to the people.

“In Sitiawan, there are about 500 families who had been cultivating land without title for 20 years. Now they have been asked to quit by June 30.

“The total number of people who will be affected by this heartless and cruel action will be in the region of 3,000 people.

“Legally speaking, these farmers had farmed illegally. But this problem must be regarded primarily as a social problem and not in the category of thefts, robberies, kidnappings and other illegal and criminal activities.

“The best solution will be to regularise the position of these farmers, not by evicting them, but by giving them permanent titles.

“A government with a social conscience will do this. Representatives of the people, whether at the Parliament or State Assembly level, who have a social conscience, will fight for this.

“This is because a government exists to serve the people, and not to harrass and hound the people.

“We hope the Alliance government will seriously re-consider this matter, and work out a solution which will cause least hardship and suffering to the ordinary people.”

Various attempts to break-up DAP – PPP electoral pact

Talk by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr Lim Kit Siang, to the Perak State Sub-Committee at Ipoh on Sunday, May 19 at 11 a.m.

There have been various attempts to predict or engineer the break – up of the electoral pact reached between the Democratic Action Party and the People’s Progressive Party.

The Perak Mentri Besar said he was confident that the DAP – PPP electoral pact would not last long.

This is the fond hope and wish of the Alliance and MCA politicians and leaders. They want opposition parties to fight one another, split opposition votes, and allow the Alliance and MCA candidates to win by default. Continue reading Various attempts to break-up DAP – PPP electoral pact
