Call on Daim Zainuddin to confirm whether his family’s 51% UMBC shares are being negotiated for sale to Pernas at $8.50 per share.

Finance Minister, Daim Zainuddin’s explanation on the circumstances in which his family companies required first 41 per cent of UMBC shares in 1984 and then increased the stake to 51% in 1985, failed to convince Malaysians that there has been no conflict of interest between his official position and this family’s private interest. I regret that the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamed, has made an intemperate speech at the 37th UMNO General Assembly yesterday, on the DAP, national unity, the general elections, the investment climate in the country, indulging in his typically unwarranted allegations and charges against the DAP and other critics of the Barisan Nasional Government. In 1984, when Multi-Purpose Holdings announced the swap of its 41% UMBC shares in exchange for the 51% Malaysia-French Bank shares, together with $125 million in cash, belonging to Daim Zainuddin’s companies, the then MPH managing director, Tan Koon Swan, said that this was a fair, equitable and beneficial deal to Multi-Purpose shareholders. The MCA President, Tan Koon Swan, said in Johore Bahru yesterday that the MCA would not support the extension of the New Economic Policy. A day earlier iin Kluang, Tan Koon Swan said that the MCA will take steps to amend the Federal Constitution if the Supreme Court ruled that parents do not have in the choice of religion of their children in the Susie Teoh case. The mysterious $2 company, MAKUWASA, bought 13 share counters from the Employees Provident Fund from August 1984 to March 1985 at below market prices, causing the EPF to lose $10 million profit which should have accrued to the credit of the five million EPF contributors.
