State Committees and Finance

I had asked for new approaches and concepts in organization to better equip the Party for the Eighties. New ideas and approaches should not be confined to Organisation, but must apply to all fields of Party activity.

In F.SG.D. (SG/6/80), I had dwelt on the ‘Responsibility and Challenge of State Committees’. What I said there was only the beginning of new ideas on State Committee’s new responsibilities in the Decade of the Eighties. Continue reading From the SG’s Desk

Responsibility and Challenge of State Committees

From now on, State Committees must play an active and leading role for all party tasks in the State, and the Central Executive Committee will hold the State Committees responsible for all aspects of the Party’s programmes and projects in the state, e.g. in fulfilling sales targets for the Rockets, in upgrading the organization of branches, or in meeting the various political tasks set by the Party leadership from time to time. DAP Political Offensive for the Eighties

The DAP is now on the eve of launching the Party’s Political Offensive of the 80s. this political offensive, aimed at winning over a even bigger number of Malaysians, needs the support, contribution and sacrifice of every party member, official, Member of Parliament and State Assemblyman, to ensure its success.

The success of this political offensive will determine whether the DAP will grow to be an even more powerful political force in the country, or whether our glorious days are already behind us. I believe that our finest days are still ahead, and let us, together, scale even greater heights. Continue reading From the SG’s Desk

Be Ready for Voters’ Registration Campaign in September

In the last three general elections, the Dap found on each occasion that in all the constituencies we contested, we had many supporters who could not vote for us because they are not registered voters. There is no doubt that we would have more elected MPs and State Assemblymen if all our supporters had registered as voters.

Up till now, DAP branches and state committees had not given the voters registration month the importance it deserved. The Party, all down the line from national to state and branch levels, should give serious attention to the voters registration exercise this year, which will be held next month in September. There are of course many difficulties and obstacles in the way of facilitating our maximising registration of eligible voters, but it is up to our resourcefulness and indemnity to overcome these difficulties and obstacles. DAP ‘obstacle to national unity’?

(Speech by the Parliamentary Leader, DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Petaling, Lim Kit Siang, in the Dewan Rakyat on the First 1979 Supplementary Development Estimates on March 29, 1979)

In presenting this first 1979 supplementary development estimates, amounting to $2,954 million, the items which stand out are the proposed increases in expenditures for defence and security purposes. The Government is asking for approval for a hefty $372 million increase for the Ministry of Defence and another $306 million for police, bringing increased expenditures for these two heads to $678 million.

These two items represent 23% of the first development supplementary estimates. This means that out of every dollar that we are spending out of the $2,954 million we are being asked to approve today, 23 cents will be on defence and security. In contrast, education in the first 1979 development estimates is only a paltry $29 million, or 1% of the supplementary development estimates. This means that for every dollar of the supplementary development estimates, only one cent goes to education. Continue reading DAP ‘obstacle to national unity’?
