When the MCE results were released last week, there was a student in Penang who achieved eight distinctions but who failed to get a certificate because of his failure in the Bahasa Malaysia paper. The teaching of Jawi in primary schools

Recently, UMNO and UMNO youth have been building up pressure demanding that Jawi should be taught as a compulsory subject in schools.

A matter of grave concern to parents and Malaysians is the falling standard and quality of education of our 1.7 million primary and secondary students in Malaysian schools.

The Future of Chinese primary and secondary schools

The Minister of Education is empowered under the 1961 Education Act to convert all national-type (Chinese) primary schools into national schools, using Bahasa Malaysia as the media of instruction.

Clause 21 (2) of the 1961 Education Act reads:

Merdeka University

In 1968, there were proposals to establish two new universities, namely the National University and the Merdeka University. The National University is now in existence. The Merdeka University, however, has run into stormy waters.

The Merdeka University was mooted by Chinese educationists and educational bodies to provide university educational opportunities for Chinese secondary school leavers. At present, these Malaysian students had to go overseas, either to Nanyang University in Singapore or the Taiwan universities for further education. Continue reading Merdeka University

Deteriorating standards of education

The general standard and quality of education in Malaysia is a cause for grave concern to parents and Malaysians. It is obvious to many that the standard of education has deteriorated gravely in recent years.

In almost every town, we find Form III students who cannot even make a proper sentence, whether in English or in Bahasa Malaysia. This is all the more shocking when it is remembered that these students have had nine years of schooling. Continue reading Deteriorating standards of education

Death sentence on school boards of management

Death sentence on school boards of management to be passed next Monday

Yesterday, the government introduced in the Dewan Ra’ayat for first reading the Education (Amendment) Bill, 1972 which will empower the Minister of Education to determine the date and way for abolishing school boards of management.

The Education (Amendment) Bill will be rushed through all stages of reading on a certificate of urgency next Monday, 10th January. This means that by Monday, in three days’ time, the death sentence will be passed on school boards of management.

The abolition of school boards of management is of special concern to Chinese schools, for the school boards of management had been the life-blood of Chinese education in Malaysia. Continue reading Death sentence on school boards of management

Recognition of Nanyang and Formosan University degrees and qualifications by government

Malaysia suffers from an acute shortage of qualified manpower. We are short of teachers, doctors, engineers, agricultural specialists, technicians and administrators.

The First Malaysia Plan in 1965 gave some interesting data. It said that in 1965, 30 per cent of jobs in the private sector which require more than a secondary education are either vacant or filled by non-Malaysians as no qualified Malaysians are available to fill them. In the public services, recruitment succeeded in filling only 70% of the 3,500 vacancies in government departments. Lim Kit Siang to raise problems of Chinese Education in Parliament next month

The DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, will raise the problem of Chinese Education in Parliament which begins sitting on December 8.
