Call to crusade for a Malaysian Malaysia until eventual victory

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, when speaking to DAP members, election workers and supporters for the Ulu Selangor by-election at the DAP Kuala Kubu Bahru by-election head office on the night of Nomination, 18th May 1972 at 7.30 p.m.

Call to crusade for a Malaysian Malaysia until eventual victory

The Ulu Selangor Parliamentary seat has traditionally been regarded as a safe seat for the MCA.

This is why in the previous general elections, this seat has always been reserved for the pawns and puppets like Tan Sri Ong Yoke Lin and Tan Sri Khaw Kai Boh who would have been decisively defeated if they had stood in other areas. Call to DAP branches and members to prepare for early general elections

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, when addressing the Malacca State DAP State Sub-Committee meeting at Malacca DAP Headquarters, 33A Jalan Munshi Abdullah, Malacca on Friday, 25th February 1972 at 5 p.m.

Call to DAP branches and members to prepare for early general elections

DAP branches and members should begin making preparations for the next general elections, which may be held as early as the latter part of next year.

Although the last general elections was held in May 1969, the Alliance Government need not call for fresh general elections until February 1976. This is because the five-year term of a Parliament is not computed from the date of last general elections, but from the convening of the new Parliament. In this case, the new Parliament was not convened until February 1971, a delay of nearly 22 months. Continue reading Call to DAP branches and members to prepare for early general elections

Lowering of Voting Age from 21 to 18

Adjournment speech by DAP Member of Parliament, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, in the Dewan Ra’ayat on 10th December, 1971

Lowering of Voting Age from 21 to 18

Early this year, Parliament passed a law, ‘The Age of Majority Act’, reducing the legal Age from 21 to 18 years. If young men or girls of 18 years are to treated for serious civil purposes as mature people and be able to own property, to enter into contractual obligations and rights, then the case is strengthened that they should have the vote as well. People ought to have the right to vote and to have a say about the way in which their lives are governed and in which the country is being run – at the age at which society expects them to assume adult social responsibilities. When there is war or national emergency the young men of 18 are conscripted to service and many serve without conscription. It is clearly a strong argument that if you can expect a young man of 18 to die in the defence of the country, then he should be given the right to help decide in the shaping of the country for which he is being asked to die. Call on Alliance puppet government of Dr. Lim Chong Eu to resign and hold fresh State general elections

Speech by DAP Malacca State Chairman and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP Public Rally in Penang at the Esplanade on Sunday, 5th September 1971 at 8pm

Call on Alliance puppet government of Dr. Lim Chong Eu to resign and hold fresh State general elections

In October last year, during my last visit to Penang, I had occasion to describe the Gerakan government of Dr. Lim Chong Eu as “more Alliance than the Alliance” in its complete disregard of the suffering and hardship of the ordinary people, its high-handed treatment of Opposition views and those who fall victim to its policies and measures.

Today, about a year later, there has been deterioration in the character of the Gerakan Government in Penang. It has become an Alliance puppet government, completely at the mercy of the four UMNO State Assemblymen in Penang. DAP calls for electoral reforms

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr Lim Kit Siang, when he officially opened the Niyor DAP Branch in Johore on Monday, 30th August 1971 at 2 p.m.

DAP calls for electoral reforms with (i) automatic registration of eligible voters; (ii) compulsory voting (iii) reduction of voting age to 18

This is the third DAP branch in the Bekok constituency to be officially opened in four days – after the Chamek DAP Branch and Cha’ah DAP Branch.

There is no better evidence than these official openings of the DAP’s growing and expanding ground support in Bekok and in Johore. I expect to see more branches to be opened in Bekok and Johore, to provide more vehicles for the propagation of our creed to build a democratic socialist Malaysia. Johore Politics

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr Lim Kit Siang, when he officially opened the Chamek DAP Branch in Johor on 27th August 1971 at 4pm

The official opening of the Chamek DAP Branch marks the first fruit of the DAP’s campaign in the Bekok by-election in May this year.

Although we lost the by-election, we have succeeded in establishing nuclei of dedicated supporters and members of the Party in the constituency, which will be further evidenced in the next few days when the Cha’ah DAP Branch and the Niyor DAP Branch will be officially opened.

It is not an easy matter to build up a branch. It is even more difficult to maintain it. They call for a high quality of dedication, sacrifice, public spiritedness and commitment to the cause for a democratic socialist Malaysia from our members, cadres and officials. Dear People and Voters of Malacca,

I wish first of all to thank the people and voters of Malacca who have shown me great kindness and given me great encouragement and support since Nomination Day, April 5.

This has given the DAP and myself confidence that after 10th May, Malacca will emerge as one of the foremost capitals of the Malaysian Malaysia campaign and regain her historic role of 500 years ago, when she was a leader of ideas, hub of commerce and centre of culture.

Alliance and its candidate, Mr. Koh Kim Leng
