DAP to stand by our Parliamentary and State Assembly record for the past five years

Speech by DAP Secretary-General Lim Kit Siang to a meeting of potential Parliamentary and State candidates for the 1974 General Elections at Jalan Sultan, Kuala Lumpur, on Sunday, August 4, 1974 at 10.30

1. DAP to stand by our Parliamentary and State Assembly record for the past five years

The DAP will go into the general elections on our Parliamentary and State Assembly record of the past five years. We can be justifiably proud of our Parliamentary and State Assembly record for we have fulfilled our pledge to champion the poor, the worker, the hawker, the squatter, the fisherman, farmer, the estate worker, the under-privileged and the downtrodden, whose voice had been shut out of the legislatures. We have fought against injustice, inequality and corruption and abuse of power in Parliament and the State Assemblies, although we attracted the wrath of the government. DAP calls on the government to rescind its decision to treble the deposit money for Parliamentary and State candidates

Speech by DAP Secretary-General, Lim Kit Siang, at a Pre-General Elections Rally at Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, on Friday, 2nd August 1974 at 9 p.m.

1. DAP calls on the government to rescind its decision to treble the deposit money for Parliamentary and State candidates

The government has announced the trebling of deposits for Parliamentary candidates from $500 to $1,500 and for State Assembly candidates from $250 to $750.

The raising of the deposits has made politics in Malaysia even more of a rich man’s game, with the result that the voice of the poor will have less chance to be heard in Parliament and the State Assemblies. Lim Kit Siang calls on the Government not to increase the deposits for parliamentary and state candidates

Lim Kit Siang calls on the Government not to increase the deposits for parliamentary and state candidates so as to ensure that the coming general elections is a contest of policies and political ideas, and not a contest of money.

There has been reports from more and more authoritative quarters that for the coming general elections, which we expect to be held between August 8 – August 24, the government would increase the deposits for parliamentary and state assembly candidates by three or four times.

At present, the deposit for a state assembly candidate is $250 and the deposit for a parliamentary candidate is $500. Continue reading Lim Kit Siang calls on the Government not to increase the deposits for parliamentary and state candidates

Minimum Wage Law for Workers

Since the resumption of Parliaments in February 1971 till now, one of the constant subjects my colleagues and I in the DAP have kept pressing for inside this Chamber is for the enactment of legislation to fix basic minimum wages for workers, to ensure that they and their dependents enjoy the basic human needs of food, clothing, housing and schooling.

Unfortunately, this proposal, to my knowledge, had never received the serious consideration of the government, probably for the simple reason that there is not a single Cabinet Minister who had a labour past, and who understands and sympathises with the sufferings, aspirations and hopes of the working class. Parliament Questions

DAP Member of Parliament. Lim Kit Siang, will ask the following questions when Parliament meets from July 17 to 26:

1. To ask the Prime Minister to state whether the Government would permit Malaysians to travel freely to the People’s Republic of China, as to other countries with which Malaysia has diplomatic relations, without having to get clearance by the Special Branch and immigration authorities, as a further step to break down the ‘barriers of spirit and mind, of misunderstanding and misapprehension’ and restore the traditional friendships between the peoples of Malaysia and China.

2. To ask the Prime Minister to state
(i) whether the question of the 200,000 – 300,000 stateless persons of Chinese origin in Malaysia was over discussed with Chairman Mao Tse Tung, Premier Chou En Lai or any other Chinese leaders during his six-day visit to the People’s Republic of China, and if so, to give a report of the nature of such discussions; Continue reading Parliament Questions

Parliament may be dissolved in July and General Elections hold in August

With the end of Tun Razak’s trip to China and the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China, the ground is prepared for the general elections.

The way the National Front is exploiting the China issue is evident to observers that the ruling party is desperately hoping that the China issue would save their candidates from defeats in the next general elections.
