DAP calls on IGP to direct to all police investigations into complaints against police brutality and atrocities should be completed within one month to gain public confidence that the police would be objective arid impartial in cases.

DAP calls on IGP to direct to all police investigations into complaints against police brutality and atrocities should be completed within one month to gain public confidence that the police would be objective arid impartial in cases.

At the recently—concluded Parliamentary meeting, I had tabled an oral question to ask the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Musa Hitam, the result of police investigations into the police shooting incident in Batu Pahat on 15th May 1983 where a fisherman, Gan Kim Guan, 19, was killed when on a motor—cycle carrying a pillion at about 3.50 a.m. after a night’s vigil at a funeral parlour for a friend’s father who passed away. On 29th October 1982, a resident of Thean Teik Estate in Penang, Madam Tan Siew Lee, 33, was killed when shot in the neck by police in a scuffle between about 100 Thean Teik Estate residents and workers of the developers of Thean Teik Estate, Perumahan Farlim, who wanted to demolish the chicken coops of one of the residents. Another resident, Chuah Teow Huat, who was standing far off from the scene of the scuffle, was shot in the left hip by the police. Call on Inspector-General of Police, to direct that swift action should be taken in all complaints against abuse of power by police personnel to ensure public confidence.

In a recent series of press interviews, the Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Haniff Omar, has urged members of the public to come forward in cases of abuse of power by the police, and even offered protection to members of the public who fear reprisals for reporting cases of misuse of powers by policement. I welcome the statement by Chief Public Relation Officer at the Police Headquarters in Bukit Aman in Kuala Lumpur, Supt. Abdul Rahim bin Haji Hamid, that the Police would take action against a detective and two constable if allegation that they assault a 20-year-old girl, Hau Seok Chin, in Bakri New Village, Muar, Johore, August 26 are true.
