Yesterday evening, just before I left the DAP Hqrs for the Subang International Airport to catch a flight to Penang, I learn of the Bukit Aman police statement that I have been asked to give clarification to the CId Director. Datuk Mohd Said Awang on my statements calling on the police to withdraw the report against Irene Fernandez for criminal defamation, to co-operate in an independent inquiry into Tenaganita allegations about mal-treatment of Bangladeshi and other illegal immigrants in Imigration detention camps and for expressing my lack of confidence in the impartiality and independence of the Police when it has to conduct investigations involving government leaders and the Police. The Malaysian Chinese community, and I am sure the entire Malaysian society if they are aware of it, is revolted by the despicable attack on Lu Ting Yu, Vice President of the Chinese Teachers’ Federation and Asst. Secretary of the Merdeka University project.

The people as a whole, I am sure, knows who is responsible for this despicable deed. I do not believe the person who attacked Lu Ting Yu really knows who he was attacking. But he has committed not only an offence, but committed a great wrong against the cause and movement for which Lu Ting Yu has given his life for – the cause of Chinese education and Merdeka University. A letter to Editor of Thong Pao- Fund for Mr. Chan Kok Seng

Sir,

I enclose a small personal contribution of $20 towards the fund for Mr. Chan Kok Seng, to fit him with artificial limbs. I appeal to all charitable and kind-hearted Malaysian, from all walks of life, to make their contribution to rehabilitate the life of an unfortunate youth.

The ordeal of Mr.Chan Kok Seng has two lessens for us:

Lessen One: There is increasing lawlessness in the country with open robbery, extortion and violence in the towns mounting over the months.

The proposal to allow good-behaviour prisoners at the end of their sentence to have weekly family reunion is an enlightened and progressive one, as it will help to condition them to return to normal family life.
