DAP calls for commission of inquiry into detention and confiscation of film of Utusan Melayu photographer

The DAP deplores in the strongest terms the high-handed action of the police and army in detaining for over two hours a Utusan Melayu photographer, Enche Daim bin Abdullah, who was discharging his duty as press photographer, and in confiscating his film, at the Jalan Gurney recruiting centre yesterday.

This is a clear case of abuse of police and security powers. Police and security powers are not meant to allow the police and the army authorities to censor and obstruct the work of journalists from exposing their inefficiency and incompetence. Police and security powers, like detaining people, are meant to be used with utmost discretion, and only in cases where it can be justified. Call on the government to withdraw the $10 million

The Organising Secretary of the DAP, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today called on the government to withdraw the $10 million it has pledged to contribute to the MCA College, and contribute to the Merdeka University proposal instead.

In an interview with the Sin Chew Jit Poh, Mr. Lim said that it was wrong and improper for the government to make use of the public funds for a political project intended purely to win back votes for the MCA in the next elections.

Mr. Lim pointed out that none other than the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Inche Senu bin Abdul Rahman, had admitted publicly, at a meeting of UMNO in Kedah recently, that the MCA College was meant to win votes for the MCA. Declaring Sabah to be part of the Philippines

Comment by Lim Kit Siang, Organising Secretary, DAP, 29.8.68

The passage of an amendment to a Bill by the Philippines House of Representatives which declared Sabah to be part of the Philippines is “infantile and irresponsible.”

It is just like President Sukarno colouring Philippines from one end and Madagascar to the other as part of Indonesia. Everybody knows what became of Sukarno.

Such an act is infantile because it will not be able to change one dot of the situation. It is irresponsible because all it can do is to sour up further the already strained Filipino-Malaysian relationship. Continue reading Declaring Sabah to be part of the Philippines

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the DAP eleventh Merdeka Anniversary Celebrations held at the Sentral DAP Branch premises, 632-A Jalan Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, on Wednesday, August 28 at 7.30 p.m.

While celebrating the 11th Merdeka Anniversary of Malaysia, we must pause and take stock of what progress we have made in our eleven years of independent nationhood.

In my mind, the crucial question to ask is: are we getting a more Malaysian-minded or a more race-motivated nation? Continue reading Where the DAP differs with the Alliance and the Gerakan: that Malaysia should be a multi-lingual and multi-cultural nation practicing cultural democracy
